I don't know. There is a removable part in the top that we clean. The top itself appears to be sound. The unit has done this almost since new, years now. The rice comes out fine each time. There is also some bubbling out of a vent that is part of the top, but this is not the source of this pool of whitish water under the unit. It does not affect the operation of the device, but I sure would like to know what is causing it just because I like to know how things work.

Yup, based on experience with them in Japan I'd say lack of rinsing and too much water for cooking. Rinse better and slowly reduce the amount of water each time until it's just right.

I swirl mine round rather like a gold prospector and change the water until it's clear. Too much starch equals gunge. |

Agreed on the rinsing.

Out of curiousity, why not use a pressure cooker?

Strange. I get steam out of the top vent, but no bubbling. Out of curiosity, do you rinse your white rice (a lot) before cooking? That wouldn't be the cause of the leak/bubbling, but if you're seeing white liquid it sounds as if your rice isn't sufficiently rinsed. At the very least, it might make cleanup easier.

edit: after much boiling I finally tried it. Not good. Threw it out and had toast. :( Perhaps the Porridge setting is for Irish (steel cut) oats instead?

The rice cooker is fully auto, just press the button, a pressure cooker needs to be watched and timed

I tried making oatmeal today. Zoji wants way too much water. I put in 1.5 cups of rolled oats and filled to the "1.5 - Porridge" line. When it said it was done, it was essentially oatmeal soup. It's now boiling down on the stove a bit...

However, I use my Zoji quite frequently for steel-cut oats. I prep the night before, and use the timer feature so they are ready first thing in the morning. 2 cups steel-cut oats, 2/3 cup chopped dates, and 7 cups water makes a great batch of oats (no need to add sugar). Rolled oats have a much shorter cooking time than steel-cut; since the porridge setting works well for steel-cut oats, I can imagine that it turned your rolled oats to mush. |
Tonight I used slightly less water than the rice cooker bowl called for. I also washed the rice for a few passes. The result was significantly less white watery crud under the rice cooker, but still some. I think I will try less water next time.

I use a small Zojirushi cooker.
It plays cute tunes when starting up and when done, like twinkle twinkle little star. lol Rice cooking is very good but takes a much longer time than my old cheap National brand. |
