I had some at Dairy Queen yesterday that were pretty good. Real Rings, not processsed onion bits in ovals like BK.

The issue with A&W is that it is a regional thing; A&W in Georgia will use a completely different supplier than the one in Florida. There are no "A&W standard onion rings". I don't know about DQ a standard.

In parts of Oregon and Washington state, the small Burgerville chain makes marvelous "Walla Walla Sweet Onion Rings".

Ah...but they're only seasonal. I wish they had the goodness known as their onion rings year round.

Specifically for fast food, I like Popeyes onion rings. Real onion. Not otherwise a big fan of this chain, but the rings work for me.

Is it the onion you like or the ring?

I eat onion rings for the breading. Therefore the thinnest possible onion is preferable. In fact, those reconstituted frozen ones made from onion flakes are quite tasty for crustal purposes

That said, the ones from Sonic are usually very good for a fried breading fix, even if I do have to pull the onion out of the thicker ones and dispose of properly.
Perhaps your onion-pulling-and-disposing technique deserves a thread of its own.

Thanks for the reflective-type question and the chuckle. ^

I'm not sure if this meets the requirements, but I love the o-rings at Red Robin. I know you can order take-out but it may not qualify as fast food.

not fast food but certainly not slow food. If you are in the Chicagoland area, the onion loaf from Hackney's is to die for, I've never had onion rings that come close to the onion loaf !! DELICIOUS. Good burgers served as well.

Mr. sjl has tried them all and thinks Zippys has the best. You'll have to come to Hawaii to taste. There may be a couple of Zippys on the West coast.

I really like Popeye's red beans & rice, as well as the biscuits, a side of red beans & a biscuit make a great meal.

I don't think I had ever tried Culver's onion rings so I went this evening. They were ok but I urge you seeing as you are 'local' to try the onion loaf at Hackney's if you really like onions.

Of course the frozen custard at Culver's was good That said, I wish we had a Kopp's frozen custard in the Chicagoland area, www.kopps.com

As a kid, I have fond memories of A&W onion rings. I will have to try the Burgerville and Red Robin varieties. I'm getting hungry right now. I wonder if I will have food dreams tonight instead of ....
