Consistently Bad Coffee

One of the things I liked about moving to Georgia was being able to grab a quick bite at The Waffle House:). But, oh that coffee!:(
After a quarter of a century, I would have thought that maybe at some point it might have gotten a little more to my likeing:confused:.

Anybody else experienced anything like this?

What is your specific complaint with regards to Waffle House coffee? I ate there maybe a year ago last and while there was certainly nothing special about it I don't remember it being any worse than similar places, e.g., Denny's, Perkins, etc.

there are two (main?) kinds of coffee beans. robusta and arabica. robusta tends to be much less expensive, and very acid and somewhat bitter. also does not hold up well for very long after brewed.

strangly, italian coffees are robusta.

I guess it seems acid and bitter to me. It's about the only place where I have to put creamer in my coffee.:p

What amuses me is that other than the coffee, I like going to The Waffle House:). And so I keep going back; for over 25 years, now:D.
But, oh that first taste of the coffee:mad:. I laugh at myself, and wonder if other people have this experience of liking every thing about a place, except that one darn thing.:D

:-::D^

I'm not a breakfast eater, so it's a patty melt and hash browns for me if I'm adding to my WaffleHouseMemory.

I have noticed that coffee in many places does not taste very good anymore. It seems to be over-roasted or from a machine that has a lot of bitter residue in it. I drink it black/unsweetened, so maybe I'm more sensitive to the taste than others. Nescafe Instant is my favorite now, go figure.

Let's face it - coffee in most places has never tasted good.

Bitter is what you get when you take enough grounds for 4 cups, and run a gallon of water through it.

Most breakfast places don't make any money on their coffee -- why not make it as cheap as possible?

I've never really noticed Waffle House coffee being any better or worse than any other breakfast joint. It is usually plenty hot at the one I go to and that's one my pet peeves luke warm coffee in a restaurant

(despite my signature)

I suggest you stop ordering your coffee scattered smothered covered tossed and chunked. Plain might be better, even if you normally don't drink it black.

+1. I'm not in Waffle Houses very often but the coffee has never bothered me. I could really go for a pecan waffle about now... :)

I'm not sure where WH's coffee comes from. I stayed at an independent lodging this weekend that actually identified the coffee as "Royal Cup" which is served in many establishments and appreciated nowhere.

Where do you find decent coffee (outside of a handful of major cities) in the US anyway?

ElkeNorEast May 3, 2010 10:13 am

Waffle House is indeed a proud server of Royal Cup, according to their Coffee Story.

I love Waffle House, but haven't been to one since my uncle died... we went to town for his funeral and stayed at a Hampton Inn. There was a Shoney's and a Waffle House across the street, the two fanciest places in town! Those Pecan Waffles are deeeeelishus.

What criteria would you use to define good? I'm a little picky myself, but am satisfied with something from most of the major coffee chains. Independents are found in quite a number of small cities and towns in the US. Many roast their own beans and produce a decent product. Their used to be a website where you could search for independent coffee shops but I don't recall the name - something like anythingbutstarbucks.com

There are a lot of nice independent coffee shops popping up, as said roasting their own beans on a weekly or some even daily basis.

I enjoy them most of the time, but not being chains the quality does vary, I have found many of them open to letting you taste several, or smell the beans.
