Elephant. I was on a hunting safari with my Father in Botswana and he shot an elephant. We had elephant jerky, it was quite salty.
I guess for me anything to be considered "exotic meat" can qualify as being weird. |

Most restaurants serving Cantonese style Dim Sum will have those "Fung Chau" (which is the chicken feet you are referring to).

BBQ Cuttlefish
Poached Anglerfish Pickled Globefish Roasted Pigeon |
I had conch this year which I think is technically snail. Not much compared to most people in this thread, but qualified as my most weird dish in 2010.

As for me I've eaten snake in Vietnam (including the heart while still beating), dog meat in China, still moving octopus at Tsukiji in Tokyo I guess haggis is pretty strange, I had a few turtle dishes in Cayman, Abalone in Asia. Weirdest experience ever was probably at the penis restaurant in Hong Kong. Whale, deer were featured on that menu but no human dishes, thankfully |
On a business trip in Miyazaki, I went to dinner with our hosts. Not wanting to offend them, I partook in the chicken sashimi. About 3 days later I got hit with the worst bout of (intestinal distress) and fever. I was hoping for death to come and take me.
A couple others (Americans and Japanese) also got sick. I always said the only place I would ever consider eating raw chicken would be in Japan, never again. The raw horse was pretty good though. |
my 2 weirdest for the list
Raw sand worms - Beihai China
Stinky Tofu - Beijing China I don't plan to try either ever again |
Gibnut......or the "Royal Rat" as it is known in Belize. Actually served to the Queen of England during her visit there. Actually a rodent, tastes a bit like rabbit, however, very gamey.
|
I've eaten most things in China over the years but I've just got back from a trip there.........
Seal Lion Lip soup...........what in god's name... tasted pretty good though nickyboy |
While I was in Finland I went to a Lapland restaraunt and had Raindeer Tounge and Liver...yeck! Still remember the gross taste 5 years later

Stinky tofu - it really smells like poop and I hope to never eat it again (but always end up having some when dining with Taiwanese friends)
Congealed pig's blood wrapped in crushed peanuts - it didn't taste too bad, but won't be on my frequent menu McDonalds's McRib - all I tasted was the BBQ sauce and bread On my to-do list - the KFC Double-Down...maybe |
In Japan:
-Fermented (stinky) tofu -raw sea cucumber (I was 15 at the time) -fish genitals, raw. -various raw seafood -raw sashimi with the still live fish looking at me In China -dessert containing bird phlegm (a delicacy, and I thought that was coconut milk) -another dessert made from warm OJ and frogs' egg sac membrane. Just like phlegm floating in juice. -whole grilled pidgeon with head, eyes, beak etc -tripe -fish head soup -grilled unpeeled prawns, eaten whole incl head -whole eel -chicken feet In France: -horse -snails -various terrines In Italy: -donkey salami In Australia: -crocodile -kangaroo -ostrich In Austria: -fermented whey cheese: stinky, but oh so tasty -blutwurst: congealed pigs blood -various game meats In Russia: -boiled cow's tongue -bear: my host shot the beast himself and was nearly killed by it. -various dried fish with beer. -caviar, most black types and salmon eggs 99% of that list has been truly enjoyable and tasty. For me, it is important to sometimes disconnect brains and/or eyes from the tastebuds. The head might reject a dish which might have otherwise been really tasty. Happy eating!! NG1Fan - - |
Beef bone marrow. I thought it was tofu at first. Didn't taste bad though.
|
Standard Italian fare.
|
Nothing crazy like bull testicles and not unusual for East Asia:
Japan: Raw horse meat China: Fried Bamboo grubs Dog hot-pot Fermented Monkey brains in baijiu (supposedly good for you!) |

I wouldn't dare to eat Monkey Brain... |
Supposedly anything esoteric or disgusting is "good for you" in some way, with the most usual description in Asia being that it "gives MAN power!".
|
D'Escargot in Paris. First thought it was mushrooms by taste and look.
|
Had my second go around with pigs blood - this time congealed with rice and sweet syrup...wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't be making a habit of it :)
Who knew Cashbox KTV served such tasty dishes? |
I may win this contest. I once drank some Lao medicinal tea that included fresh cat placenta. Eeeeeek.:eek::eek: I didn't know what it was and was warned not to drink it (without being explicitly warned exactly 'why' not to drink it) but I did anyway. Only later did I find out exactly what it was as well as wayyyy too many details about how it was obtained. (it was fresh)
Other than that I have had all manner of critter innards, the ordinary fermented fish and shrimp products (tastes fine, smell kills), congealed blood products (don't much care for that), street vendor dog (in Indonesia and Moslem Indonesians wont eat dog but the Kristian minority love it), snails in Viet Nam (not escargot, little pond snails served in a plastic bag). I ate bug satay once by mistake because they were cleverly disguised by pineapple and chillies but would usually draw the line at bugs. I've chickened out on balut the one time I was called upon to try that. I have to draw the limit somewhere. I have a long standing policy that if a host is gracious enough to place food before me, I eat it, smile and say it is good. Whether it is or not.:D;) |
In Kaiserslautern Germany I stumbled across a butcher shop that specialized in various cold cuts made from horse meat. They gave me a couple of samples, tasted fine, but I just couldn't bring myself to buying any to take home.
-Alligator, somewhere in Louisiana -Goat in Nuevo Laredo -Blutwurst in Germany -Black pudding in St. Andrews, Scotland (Blutwurst's fried cousin) -Octopus boiled in ink, Venice -Chitlins in South Carolina -Frog legs, in numerous places -Haggis in Edinburgh -Shark nuggets , at some fire department fundraiser I saw while driving along Highway 17, north of Charleston SC -Shrimp and Grits, numerous places in SC. Maybe it's weird, maybe not. But my friends in NY think it is downright bizarre. |
All kinds of things in Asia:
Chicken feet Duck feet Cows stomach Fish eyes Small squid (in Korea) Most weird thing I ever ate was also in Asia: stuffed frog. The dish still looked like a frog, looking at you... In Europe (The Netherlands): balkenbrij http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenbrij. Tasted pretty good: sautéed and with some sugar on a piece of bread. |
fish sperm sacs
dog stew dolphin carpaccio whale steak duck tongues assorted horsemeat hotpot |

Miller Lite. :D:D Well, not really "eating," I guess.
Weirdest was probably alligator, bought frozen in Baltimore at one of the street markets. Tried to grill it. Not too great. Decided to pass on the fresh "marsh rabbit," which a veterinarian friend tells me is muskrat. I have a friend who was in the army and out on a training mission. Their supplies never got dropped and they had to resort to eating a goat they caught. Raw. |
Almost threw up reading some of these.
Craziest thing I've had is rattlesnake. Had it as part of a queso dip at Buckhorn Exchange here in Denver. Would not get it again. |
tartar horse sausage. tastes good but for those who have good teeth :)

Abalone. Yuck...
|
As a rule, I'll try just about anything once.
On my list of weird things:
|
mainly meats: Ostrich, kangaroo, reindeer, rattlesnake, and other gamey stuff.
|
Once while backpacking I had lime Kool aid with strips of Bologna in it
|
Fried chicken livers. Absolutely disgusting. Incidentally, they seem to fry a lot of things down here that I don't get (bologna sandwiches?).

Some of the stranger things I've eaten is horse and ostrich. Oh, also frog legs (which tastes a bit like chicken in my opinion) |
Probably chocolate covered ants. Seriously.
|
Well, I refused to eat them, but crickets in Japan. (inago)
No thank you!!!!! Fun things in Japan that I have eaten: Fish uterus Fish uterus with eggs Crab brain Squid innards Yum! ;) All taste pretty good with sake or shochu. |
I had chicken sashimi a few weeks ago. Interesting to try but not among my favorite things.
|
it's probably because I'm raised this way, but I'm very wary of things that include raw chicken. I've always been told raw chicken meat is one of the biggets sources of salmonella.
