Thanks,

My spending is much lower (explains why my retention bonus is lower) The majority of my spending is on United Chase Visa and Starwood Amex.

Interesting that I got a retention bonus on my United Chase Visa for the first time ever this year as well as the Starwood Amex.

Greg

Got the same offer this week without any problems. My average spend is 3-4K per month.

I was just offered (again) 10K points or a credit of $300 for my annual fee. I took the $300.

More than most, but not as much as some.

The $300 is the Carte Blanche annual fee.

No go this yr.

The offer was to redeem 8K pts for the annual fee.

Now I have to weight the DC benefits vs cost...

That's an absolutely horrible deal - 8K DC points are worth far more than $95.

I agree with DivMiler: call again and maybe you'll get a different rep who will give you a better offer.

I called 800-2DINERS yesterday and got the 2500 point offer. I spent over $40K last year on this card and I have had it since 1994 so I was not happy.I called the retention department directly today and got the same offer at first. After my pushing some, the CSR checked with his supervisor and was able to waive the $95. He mentioned that I had spent very little the past few months and that is why he needed approval to waive the fee. Perhaps next year I'll be sure to charge a lot just before my anniversary.

No love to Canadian DC members

Well, I just called to cancel on the anniversary of my membership. The CSR asked why I wanted to cancel, and I said I couldn't justify the annual fee of $99. She asked me to hold, and then quickly returned. She asked me, "So you want to cancel because of the annual fee?" I said yes, expecting her to make an offer, but instead was told, "Ok, Sir, your card is cancelled with immediate effect. Will there be anything else today?"

It doesn't bother me, as I meant to cancel the card, but since Citi has rights to DC in the US and Canada, why is there such a different policy with regards to retention?

Since it's been over 3 years since GregL started this thread I think it's important to reemphasize that when seeking the best retention bonus the above phone # is the one that you want to call, not the basic 800-2DINERS that's on the back of the card.

Actually, 8K points is worth only about $80.

Or
using points to cash:
Club Rewards Points-to-Cash: 15,000 points ($15,000 in charges) = $100 statement credit
That would give 8K points a cash value of $ 53.33

The waive of the annual fee is always a better deal.

The deal they offered me was they would award me 7500 points, and I would use 500 of my own points, negating the annual fee.

That's one of the ways to value the points but there are other people who value flexibility of DC pts which can worth far more than $0.01/pt...
