The only thing I get out of this thread?
Plats on a Y fare who have not been upgraded are given Zone 1 boarding priority.

I would lay odds that #1 on the list also had a companion on the PNR. If so, their upgrade position would show as it would normally, but the upgrade will not process unless:
- If done according to the posted rules, when the Companion is upgraded
- If not done according to the posted rules, when the GA processes the higher-level person the PNR separately

I'd have asked the GA if I could let the Skipper have the upgrade if I could be seated in Y next to Mary Ann. Not only would I be chatting up the eye candy (and a nice girl to boot!), but it never hurts to let your boss have the upgrade, especially around pay rise time.
Also curious why the Thurston and "Lovey" Howell would be waitlisted as #4 and #5, as they always fly paid F or use NetJets. Something about your story doesn't ring true, Evan!.

Somewhat similar, but I'm thinking #1 had a companion and told the GA to bypass his bf u/g. I've had GAs ask me when I was #1 and my wife at #4 wasn't going to make it. (Of course, that means she got the u/g, just via me instead of DL )

Thurston and Lovey have been hard hit by this economy. Their DL Reserve limit was taken down from $1 million to $500,000 and this ticked him off so much he cancelled the card. Guess AMEX gets the last laugh.

Do not mean to threadjack, but I have a related dying question -
I am a NW platinum. Bought an L fare class and was upgraded 5 days out on dtw->atl 1:30p flight. Volunteered my seat and was confirmed on the last flight of the day in Y fare class. Delta.com showed 4 available F seats, but did not show the priority list - it wanted me to check-in first (but I already had a boarding pass in my hand!). Not a big deal - with 4 open F seats, odds of a platinum on a Y fare getting upgraded were very high. So off I went to use my food vouchers, to be back at the gate to get my upgraded boarding pass. Hold your breath - GA says I am #15 in the list! It's hard to believe that at least 14 platinums with a Y fare were waiting to be upgraded!
This is not a one-off event. The 5-day window upgrade process works fine, but the battlefield upgrade process always puts me near the bottom of the pack. What's even more intriguing is that my name never appears in the upgrade list in the gate monitors when I am waiting for a battlefield upgrade. The GAs confirm that I am on the list (but way down to have a chance of getting upgraded).
It once happened that on an atl->dtw flight one GA said I was on the upgrade list, almost at the bottom, but the monitor did not list me as one of the passengers waiting for an upgrade. Waited for a few more minutes to let the list refresh - still no luck. So I approached the 2nd GA. She punched a few keys and almost instantaneously, I showed up at #2 in the monitor! I wonder how many upgrades I missed like this. Anyone else on the same boat?

What is your status with DL? Because this involved manual manipulation of the ticket it could be that you were loaded back in under your DL status and not your NW. I have avoided, like the plague, anything that could allow DL to accidentally use my status with them (gold) vs. my status with NW (plat).
