I need a plan B in case of misconnect in SCL

I know it's not a good plan to book the last flights of the day, so now I'm trying to be proactive in case there's a misconnect on my OAK/ SLC/ATL flight later in the month. If there's a delay in OAK, I would have a better chance of being rebooked there than SLC. Would DL rebook me out of SFO later in the day? I get to SLC at 3:47 and have more than enough time to make the 5:00 to ATL. My concern is being rebooked on the last flight, which gets me home at 6:00 AM. Many of you have said it's always a good idea to have an alternate schedule in mind in case of a bump or reroute, but I can't find anything out of SLC. Would I be stuck on the redeye, or would DL rebook me on another airline?

DL is not obligated to book you on another airline - even in the case of their mechanical failure. You might have a chance getting rebooked out of your origin if it's wholly obvious you will misconnect in SLC. Otheriwse, from SLC you will be confirmed on the next DL flight with availability in your purchased cabin of service. If you're anxious, try Same Day Confirming to another itin.

Ok assuming that your title SCL (Santiago, Chile) is a typo and you meant SLC. If you want to fly earlier or change flights, you can choose to Same Day Confirm which will give you different flight options for $50 (free if you are a GM/PM). SFO would be an option IF there were no other options and you'd most likely be on your own for transportation. Unless it is Delta's fault, it is unlikely they would rebook you on another airline. Just a question, what's the dear of flying the last flight of the day? Everyday, thousands of people fly last flights of the day without problems.

Do you have to be to ATL by a certain time? If not, just roll with it. You never know what will happen. There are a bunch of decent airport hotels by SLC if it comes to that, but I wouldn't worry about it. Is therr no direct from OAK to ATL these days? Would that work as your backup if it is pretty clear you are going to misconnect in SLC?

Oops - I meant SLC. Spending the night wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have to be at work the next morning. I'll just hope for the best or try SDC if I can get to the airport earlier.

SLC is the type of airport where a 25 minute connection isn't hard to do.

Unless you're inbound on a blasted RJ with a gate check bag that you have to wait 10-15 mins for....then the odds are not in your favor.
