ATL-JNB Summer 2010

Which would you do? Hopefully not a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but first trip to Africa for a safari with friends celebrating big birthdays.
~15 hour 1-way trip, non-stop ATL-Johannesburg, 777 (lie-flat seats in BE, PVOD everywhere)
OPTION 1: ~$1800, non-upgradeable coach ticket
OPTION 2: ~$3000, upgradeable coach ticket (50,000 miles to upgrade)
OPTION 3: ~$3700, deep-discounted biz fare
OPTION 4: 230,000 miles (would wipe out the account)

The trip is late-July to early-Aug 2010; the World Cup is in JNB Jun 10-July 10, so there's a lot of questions about capacity, and the thought is we want to book the flights sooner rather than later because the safari is already booked and partially paid for.

Thanks!

Where are you getting these fares? I just paid $3,9xx for an M next March and would have gone to $4,800 for the I fare were it not for the city pair rule.

Option 3. Upgrading with miles would give you the worst cpm. You should looking for AF and NW awards to JNB via AMS. I was able to redeem 120k for travel in May, 2010 between WAS and JNB.

I didn't want to start a new thread because all I would like to know is why the JNB-ATL flight leaves in the evening?

Because the aircraft arrives from ATL in the afternoon for an evening turnaround. Very convenient, since it arrives back in ATL in the morning.
