Using Skymiles - HELP!

Hello:

I am a Canadian and my miles expire this Dec. I tried to go and buy something or buy gift cards with them but cant because no status. Is there a way to use these miles up before they expire? I have 44,000....

You don't have to have status to buy a gift card. There are a lot of ways to extend the expiration date of your miles. You can buy 1000 miles, though that's an expensive way to do it.

Or, do this: Log on to Delta.com. Click on "SkyMiles" then "Ways to Get Miles" then "Dining Retail and other Partners." There you'll find many ways to get miles. (FTD miles usually post within a week; Netflix miles never seem to post.) Or click on "SkyMiles Shopping" and find an online vendor (e.g. iTunes, Eddie Bauer, Lands End, Target). One purchase from any of the vendors listed will extend your SkyMiles expiration date, even a 99 cent purchase from iTunes.

You need to buy something soon though because sometimes it takes 8 weeks for the miles to post. I've had the best luck with iTunes, FTD and Staples.

I signed my father up for points.com yesterday and today the 10 miles posted. His expiration date changed from 2007 until 2009. Quite easy. Zero cost.

These are helpful but I only want to buy something with them not accumulate them more as I wont be flying Delta anymore. It looks like there arent any ways to redeem miles for merchandise not travel unless I am missing something? https://www.delta.com/skymiles/use_m...ners/index.jsp

Yes you can buy Delta miles on Ebay, 850 goes for about $14-$20 USD, these are coke rewards and they are deposited right into your FF account, no transfer fees. When you do this, your expiration automatically extends, one or two years. Good luck!!

Thanks for the tips! But I dont want to accumulate anymore. Not going to fly on Delta anymore. Just want to buy stuff not travel with the miles...

Looks like there isnt an option https://www.delta.com/skymiles/use_m...ners/index.jsp

And points.com wont let me swap them even.

The only thing I could see would be to transfer them to someone with status and get them to buy me something with the miles. Would cost me the USD $ 30 for the transfer....

I think you're out of luck, then. Basically the only way that a non-elite member can utilize miles is for travel-related awards.

Sorry, I don't see the connection between your inability, as a non-status SM member, to redeem your miles for merchandise and Delta's bankruptcy reorganization. Are you also claiming this same connection for the US, UA and NW bankruptcy reorganization? It would seem that my continued willingness and ability to redeem SkyMiles for free travel would be the more likely cause, but that's just my opinion.

^ Good on you for donating them to a worthy cause! I'm sure many others who are angry at Delta would have just let them expire rather than do something charitable with them.

geez DLFan.....drinking the koolaid for sure...ha ha. I am not angry just makes me laugh when an airline guts it loyalty program and doesnt allow people to benefit from them. If the other companies you mentioned, did the same thing, then yes I would say the same for them.
