zero to hero, the answer is yes it is worth it...

I started off this year with no status. I currently have 66000 MQM and I just looked at my last AMEX statement and my current spend will put the next statement over $25000. My math is rusty but I am pretty sure I get 10000 MQM for that and I get pushed to Platinum.

As a Silver I got a few upgrades, even on long haul flights like ATL - SJC. I rarely cleared at the 24 hour window.

As a Gold I am usually near the top of the heap unless it is a really busy route. I clear fairly regularly at the window and if I don't I am to the point that I am getting upgrades 80 - 90 % of the time. Also, the last time I flew out of LGW with hugely overweight bag I wasn't charged for it.

I expect that at a Platinum I will have about the same success rate but greater flexibility in flights and the pleasure of waived change fees.

The answer is yes, if you are close to a level, take the initiative and get that level. Also, I have had to fly a few other airlines and status matching makes even those trips more comfortable.

I've found as a plat, I get the happy "Your upgrade is now confirmed" much more often then I ever did as a gold.

Congrats on your new stat, and don't forget to update your profile.

looking forward to getting to plat soon for the first time too - i need it too, flying out of DCA on DL is TOUGH for upgrades!

I just made gold, with about 52,000 MQMs...I don't really have any travel planned for the rest of the year though. Bummer! This is my first time ever having status, and what little I've tasted, it is addicting. I hate being so close and not making it...but that is a lot of costly MRs. :(

Hey Akulashark, are you sure that the 10,000 bonus MQM's from the Amex Card purchases will be applied to this year's (2007) MQM tally? I somehow have this idea that the MQM's get added to your 2008 tally as the clock to spend $25,000 runs out on December 31 2007.

Spend away. I believe the MQMs will post to your 2007 total.

Mine have posted a few days after the statement in which you hit the spending limit.
