NAMU Question

Can I call SMS and say i'm using a NAMU to get in first, but then switch to 800MSU later? I'm afraid 1st will get full. Sorry if this question has been posted before.

Why bother telling them anything except that you'd like to book with an NAMU?

Need to Know. Tell 'em about segments at 72/24 hours.

That is what I meant. Call SMS now. Then at 72h call and switch. Thanks.

biometrist Dec 9, 2002 3:33 pm

Yeah. You can do that.

You can absolutely do this, and some SMS agents will even suggest you do it in order to conserve the NAMU. Ask the agent to waitlist you for V and G. If G clears, great. You can then wait for V to clear, including calling in at the 72/24 mark. If V doesn't clear, fork over the NAMU and settle back. If it does, cancel the G seat, repocket the NAMU and settle back.

Good luck!

Called SMS said G was full; however V was open. Looks like I'll be calling at the very second I'm allowed.

Did you ask to waitlist for G? Can't hurt.

If you waitlist for G, then you can't upgrade using 800MSU on the web. So, I'd rather wait for the 72h mark.

I once got stuck using a NAMU for a CVG-LGA segment (on a LAS-CVG-LGA trip) because (even though there were MSU seats available) there was no coach availability left, and according to the agent I needed to be downgraded to coach before I could be re-upgraded to first using the MSUs.

I would have tried the hang up and call again strategy but this was at the airport at time of departure.

Has this excuse been foisted on anyone else?

My IAD "angels" have assured me that this is not an excuse; apparently, the system requires this. Every time I have had them swap out a G seat for a V seat, they've had to momentarily place me in a Y seat. Sometimes they even show me the Y boarding pass.

I'm guessing that the reservation system requires you be in Y (or any upgradable Coach class) in order to be processed for a V seat. Since G isn't an upgradable Coach class, you can't get directly to V from G.

I think. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

No need to be downgraded back to coach. Switching from G to V or Z to X is supposed to be done by a simple change of class entry.

However, this does not work within 3 hours of departure.
