Distance Changes: ATL-EWR

Here's a strange story: On 10/21, I flew EWR-ATL on my way to China. I was credited with 765 miles, plus appropriate bonuses, as usual. (I fly that route a dozen or more times a year.) On 11/5, I returned from China, flying ATL-EWR for the last leg. I was credited with 745 miles, indicating that the two major airports had moved 20 miles closer together while I was out of the country. That was a good trick!

I called Delta to ask about the apparent error. I was told that the 745-mile distance is correct, but they were "graciously" not going to take away the 20 extra miles that I had been given hundreds of times over the last decade. I checked the distance on the great-circle-route web site, and -- sure enough -- Delta is right! The distance is 745 miles. Delta told me that they discovered this error 3 days ago.

Oh, well, I can always use LGA and get 761 miles!

LAX-JFK gets credited for 2475 miles, though in the DL schedule it lists the route at 2477 miles.

I am curious if they are checking all of their routes for corrected distances?

I wonder if they are correcting only the errors where they were awarding too much. I suspect that they might be awarding too few miles once in a while.

I thought they were using 765 miles between ATL and all NYC airports. Around the first of the year they changed ATL-DEN from 1201 to 1199. Maybe it took that long to figure out they moved the Denver airport.
