SWU on trans-Atlantic: DL or AF?

I have to fly HSV-STR in a couple of weeks. I can book two ways: DL or AF, but either way I'm on DL metal. Assuming I want to book in Y and use an SWU, does it matter which booking I take?

If you booked an AF ticket on DL metal then you can not use the SWU. That pretty much concludes everything, doesn't it?

Now if you meant booked on DL but either on DL metal or AF metal, TAKE DL METAL!!!!! Many more upgrades to give away on DL metal than AF metal.

Our travel policy allows me to fly in C transoceanic, so it looks like I won't have to burn an upgrade.

However, Delta must be smoking some serious crack. The low fare on their site for a C ticket HSV-STR is $7039.
If I wave my magic code-share wand, that appears to drop to $5800 on AF, flying on the same airplanes (if I'm interpreting the output from biztravel correctly). What's up with that? I mean, I like DL and all, but come on.

Can you upgrade to First Class from a paid Business Class ticket on Air France using a Systemwide Upgrade when traveling on a Delta ticket?

There are no Delta C/F upgrade awards on any airline, although you can get an F award on a few airlines. SWU's only work on DL flight numbers, and not to F class, since DL has no international F class (even on codeshares that have an F class).

PaulR,

Take the cheaper seat and credit the flight to DL. You still get base miles for it and (I assume) the elite bonus (never done that before) along with the same seat. Seems strange that the pricing is so different. They must not be aware of it.

And just to reaffirm, Opus is correct. No upgrades EVER to First class using a SWU. You can't even buy a First Class seat on a DL code-share flight.

In ATL, I once asked what the odds of a nice guy, flying in biz, on a DL ticket, on an AF flight, were for getting upgrading. The AF lounge agent laughed at me.

From what I have experienced on other occasions, I don't think it will ever happen.

Just a tiny little technical point here: You can buy a Delta First Class seat on the South African Airways-operated codeshare. You can't, however, upgrade into it.

As a side note, AF staff in CDG are the most rude and impolite people I have ever had the misfortune of being served by.

I remember a couple of years back when Delta was getting ready to rid themselves of First Class on Int'l flights that I was flying Business Class but was in the first class section using a SWU. In CDG, I was hanging around the terminal desk, a Man walked up and inquired about obtaining an upgrade on the flight. He presented his Million Miler and his Platinum Medalian cards. The woman (AF employee) never looked at the computer, she simply said "No sir, that is impossible." When I boarded in First Class, there were only 2 of us in this section.

This is the kind of service I grew accustomed to receiving in CDG. Couple this with the strikes and this is but one more reason why Delta is in serious trouble!
