New plane orders?
The A380 thread launched me into thinking of new plane deliveries for DL. How to check what planes DL has on order and when (if?) they will be realized?
I know that DL credit rating is not that great right now, but it could use some new 777s...

About halfway down this there is a delivery schedule:
http://news.delta.com/article_displa...rticle_id=8991
It's dated (10/03), but basically shows that all they have on order are some 738s and a few 777s, but most keep getting deferred or immediately sold on delivery.

When (if) are they going to get something that has capacity in between 738 and 777 (like 757 which could be used for Song)?

Personally, I think the 738 does a good job filling the area between planes like CR7s and then the 757s or 763s. When compared to some of the older 737 series planes, it's quite big.

The Sept. '03 page is not longer accurate, I believe. IIRC, sometime last summer DL announced that it would defer all 777 deliveries and sell some of the 777's in its fleet. That plan seems to have been rescinded, as 777's are still going strong. Does anyone know if DL's gov't (SEC) filings or financial/operational results reveal their fleet planning, like Continental's quarterly financial results do?
I would like to see DL aggressively move farther down the path blazed by CO, which has consolidated its operations into just four Boeing lines: 777, 767, 757, and 737. At this point, DL still has one more aircraft type with a few more total variants: 777, 767, 757, 737, MD-80/90. DL could stand to consolidate a bit more. But it has lots of MD's in fleet and they're not easy to pawn off on the straight sale, lease-finance, and lease market. Likewise, it's putting the 757's to use with Song rather than trying to phase them out of the fleet entirely (horrible aftermarket for those aircraft). Plus, DL still has lots of aircraft (including a few MD-11's, I believe) parked in the dessert, though it is pulling some aircraft back into service and continues to move some on the aftermarket. In this context, adding a new aircraft type with totally new engines doesn't seem like the best idea from a maintenance- and crew-efficiency standpoint. But the 787 has tremendous advantages in operational efficiency, or so Boeing claims. Its two variants can serve medium and long-haul routes, the latter on a network basis suited to DL's strategy. While Boeing is still trying to rack up orders, now might be the time to buy, or at least to negotiate some options (though Boeing might be skittish about its rights in the event of a bankruptcy filing). The 787 sure has some sexiness about it, and its entry into service could augur the dawn of a new era at DL, somewhat like DL's employee-purchased 767 did in the early 80's.

The earliest Delta mainline or Song will take delivery of any new aircraft is the middle of next year, and based on the SEC filing today I think Delta will sell aircraft before they ever buy any more. The only aircraft Delta is buying are RJs and now we have a glut of those too.

Wonder if DL could "alter" its order for 738's and replace them with 787's. Seems to me that the 787's would be a good fit and, not sure how much difference in price the two aircraft are, but appears to be a logical replacement. Especially if its more fuel efficient and seems to fill the void of the aging 757's and the older 732's and 733's.

I could see the 757 replaced with 738s or 739s. Passenger capacity and range are pretty close. The 737NG pretty much killed the 757 program. Long, long term, the 787 would be the perfect replacement for the 763 and 764. However I don't see them replacing these aircraft anytime soon.

You gotta be kidding!!!! New plane orders, hell they stand a better chance of reactivating the retired L1011 and B727 fleets (whats left of them) before they buy another airplane. Buy new aircraft? With what? Blood......
Another case of buying new airplanes that were not really needed and turns out to be at the worse possible time. Think of the additional hundreds of millions they would have if they would have stayed away from the B764 and B737NGs and kept the old L1011 and B727s!!!!!!!
