Ideas for better automatic upgrades
 
I have a couple of ideas for dealing with the complimentry upgrades. But before I waste a lot of time, I have a question that perhaps someone can shed some light on:

Why is it necessary to have two upgrade lists, one that is handled online (via the web or SMS) up to three hours before the flight and the other handled at the gate?
