Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

EU considers US/CANADA/MONTENEGRO security to be equal to theirs. As long as airport is setup correctly, as AMS is, no need to reclear.

Why surprised? In AMS it's simple: there are three kinds of inbound flights:

1. Intra-EU /and/ Intra-Schengen (let's call that "domestic"):
these go to a gate on the Schengen side of the airport and deplane directly into the secure airside area. You can walk freely to any gate within the Schengen area of the airport, go landside without going through immigrations or pass (airside) through immigrations to the non-Schengen side of the airport.

2. Intra-EU, but non-Schengen (flights from the UK for example), as well as flights from other airports that we deem "secure" (US, Canada):
these go to a gate on the non-Schengen (international) side of the airport, but they do deplane directly into the secure airside area. You can walk freely to any gate within the non-Schengen area of the airport. If you decide to go landside or walk over to the Schengen side of the airport, you will pass through immigrations as you are now entering the EU Schengen area. There is seperate immigrations between the non-Schengen and Schengen side of the airport (in-between the D and C concourses), so no need to go landside first: you will not leave the secure airside area and therefore will not need to reclear security. Just follow the signs the B and C gates.

3. All other flights (international from a non-trusted airport):
these go to a gate on the non-Schengen (international) side, but they deplane onto a seperate floor of the E, F or G concourses. There, you will be routed either landside (passing through immigrations before baggage claim) or, for passengers with connecting flights, through security and back into the non-Schengen secure (airside) area. From there, you can walk freely to your new gate in the non-schengen area, or over to the Schengen area. In the latter case, you will pass through (airside) immigrations in between the D and C concourses.

In your case, gate to gate time (the walking part), worse case scenario (furthest F or G gate to furthest B gate), normal pace, all moving walkways out of order, is 20 minutes or so. If you're a fast walker and use all of the moving walkways, no more than 10 minutes. Immigrations is usually no more than a couple of minutes. All gates at AMS close 15 minutes prior to departure. 99% of the time, you can probably make a 25 or 30 minute connection if you wanted to. So don't worry at all about your 90 minutes, plenty of time.

There is a KLM lounge on either side of the airport (Non-Schengen side: in-between F and E concourses, named "Lounge 52", Schengen side: up one floor at the entrance of the C concourse, just pas immigrations, named "Lounge 25"). There is a Priority pass lounge on either side as well ("Lounge 41" on the Non-Schengen side, "Lounge 26" on the Schengen side). In both cases, the lounge on the Non-Schengen side is the larger one. The non-Schengen KLM lounge (52) is the new flagship lounge. The Schengen-side Priority Pass lounge is pretty bad.

By this classification there is also a 4th category - Non-Schengen from a "trusted" airport (US/Canada/Montenegro). Arrivals from these places deplane directly into the non-Schengen secure area. No need to re-clear security unless you go landside. Immigration must be cleared if you are entering Schengen zone (either to go landside in AMS or to connect to a Schengen flight).

I like to think of it as there are two factors at play when arriving in AMS:
1. Are you coming from a Schengen/Non-Schengen origin and are you going to a Schengen/Non-Schengen destination? When O/D do not match, you must clear immigration.
2. If connecting, are you coming from a "good"-security or "bad"-security origin? If coming from a "bad' origin, you must re-clear security.

And of course if AMS is your destination then you'll clear customs as well before exiting.

So, I have a similar situation to the person above going from USA to FCO through AMS....but my situation is tricker:

1) LAX to AMS - Delta ticket with checked bag
2) AMS to FCO - KLM or Alitalia, a separate 1 way ticket on different itinerary

(Why? Because pricing. One segment paid, the other on miles.)

That said.... is 1hr 45min enough?

I'm looking at a DL 2:55p arrival and KLM 4:40p departure. Of course I will try and beg the LAX agent to check my bag all the way to FCO but very questionable if that will work out, so let's say I have to claim and re-check?

Adding onto my question - anybody have history with KLM? There's one more flight 4 hrs later. Are they likely let me onto the next flight, for free, if I miss the 4:40?

My own experience with KLM folks has been...unbendable, Dutch strictness.

No need to beg. Revenue ticket + connecting award ticket will usually (edit - What I meant was: "should") be checked through.

If not, you'll need to follow the signs to baggage claim (you'll pass through immigrations on route), pick up the luggage and exit into Schiphol plaza. Then take a left hand turn, walk to departures 2, go to the KLM SkyPriority checkin area and drop your bag. After that, follow the signs to b/c gates and you'll go through security again. There is a priority lane there as well. I assume you have SkyPriority or at least Skyteam elite. If not, go to a regular bag drop machine and the normal security line.

With Skypriority, this shouldn't take more than 10 minutes after you've got your bag. Bags can take 20 mins or so from arrival at the gate. So you should be at your new gate in about 30 mins after arrival.

It's not questionable at all. DL policy allows bags to be checked across tickets between DL and AF/KL/AZ.

Yes, you'll be rebooked onto the next flight. DL policy is to protect when both tickets are DL/AF/KL stock and the missed flight is also one.

I just did Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen KL-KL with the exact 50 minute minimum. Would not recommend at all. We landed only 2 minutes late and I barely made it and my bags did not make it. The people guarding the short connection lane at immigration exit were not letting people through even with clear <25 minute departures. My luggage did not make the connection and got to me 36 hours later.

Where the egates closed? Exiting is normally very quick. It's the reverse that lags.

"Just" making a 50 minute connection would mean being in line at immigrations for approximately 25 minutes, counting 10 minutes for walking gate to gate. 25 mins of waiting means that you were in a very, very long lime - one that I've never seen at the AMS Schengen to non-schengen passage and is certainly not the norm.

egates were a 10 minute wait (or if you want to get nitty a 9.5 minute wait then .5 to go through)
It took 13 minutes, walking quickly, to get to the exit egates from gate D80, which was the longest part.

T-48: At gate
T-45 Off Plane
T-32 At egates for exit
T-22 Through passport control
T-17 Boarded
T-15 Doors Close

D80 to the escalator is about 500 meters, with a couple of moving walkways. Immigrations is right below that. That should be no more than 5 minutes. Anyway, being 6"6, my average walking pace is probably higher and my time estimates might be a bit biased towards people with longer legs ;-). And I know my way around the airport.
