Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

Starting at January 1 2019, the Dutch state is not going to use services of the profilers from Procheck International anymore. The 170 profilers will be out of a job because Schiphol will not extend the contract with their employer (Procheck International). Last wednesday a social plan was negotiated for them.
Those are the people you see after check in/baggage drop off, in front of the KLM lounge and at D1 and for flights to Israël

According to Schiphol, this is a 'aanwijzing' (difficult to translate; something like a 'policy regulation') from the Ministry of Justice and Security, in accordance with the Aviation Act. "HRF flights receive other safety oversight when checking passengers, rolling suitcases, backpacks and handbags."
This step, according to the ministry, came about in close consultation with the Koninklijke Marechaussee, who is responsible for border control. Observation and physical checks by experts are filled in 'differently' (for instance 3D-scanners & intelligent camera’s.)

Hope this makes it more clear. Or ask one of the profilers, they will confirm it.

50 minute AMS connection that impacts second ticket

On Jan 8 2019, I do OKC-ATL-AMS-OTP then go on to IAS on Tarom using a separate ticket (4.5 hour layover at OTP).

I am increasingly worried about the 50 minute connection at AMS. I just scheduled a fusion foot surgery that may mean I will be wearing a medical boot when I make this trip.

I have never used the wheelchair service but there is no way I can literally run through AMS to catch my KLM connecting flight. I essentially had to run during my last connection going through AMS to GVA.

Is the wheelchair service my best option? I ask now because of the confirmed foot surgery. I may try to get another route to OTP if it looks like I will misconnect at AMS and thus ultimate not make my flight on to IAS.

If your inbound flight from ATL is on-time, I don't think you've got anything to worry about. Your flight from ATL will arrive within the secure area, meaning you won't have to go through security. Also, you won't have to go through immigrations as OTP (Romania) is not within the Schengen region. Your outbound flight will depart from the same area as your inbound flight from ATL. If you're lucky, it might even be the same concourse. But usually, the european flights leave from D, and wide-bodies come in at E or F.

Use the wheelchair service. They will get you to your new gate in a couple of minutes.

What had you running the last time?

My memory is faint, but I think my AMS connection to GVA was scheduled as a 2 hour connection. But we were late and it was a loooong way from arrival to departure gates. Then I got trapped at the passport line where they had a special line for those departing within x minutes which I missed by maybe 5 minutes.

I hope one of my apps will give me arrival and departure gates at AMS as that would impact my options. I wonder how far in advance one must declare the wheelchair option?

There are a few subtle differences with your last trip:

First of all: flights from the USA now arrive in the secure area at AMS. No more security, no more long walks. You deplane directly into the departure area (lower floor of the concourses). Flights from non-trusted origins (everywhere except EU or USA) deplane on the top floor of the concourse and have to reclear security. This used to be the case for US flights as well, but that has now changed.

Second difference: your previous flight was to GVA, which is within the Schengen area. So you had to clear immigrations in AMS and your flight to GVA departed from the B or C gates (or the high-numbered D-gates). That is not the case with your flight to OTP as Romania is not inside Schengen. So your connection takes place "outside" of the Schengen area and you will clear immigrations in Romania, not in Amsterdam. You flight will probably depart from concourse D (on the lower floor, outside of Schengen). Your flight from ATL usually arrives at either the D, E concourses. Worse-case gate to gate distance is about 1200 meters (E24 to D28). However, if you're lucky and your inbound flight gets assigned a D gate, then the gate for your outbound could literally be just across the hallway.

Gates in AMS are assigned dynamically. You won't now until your almost in AMS. AFAIK, assistance needs to be requested at least 24 hours in advance - three clicks in the My Trips section on Delta's website.

Assistance can be requested at anytime, including checkin at airport. There's no requirement to book in advance for wheelchair aasistance. Other medical issues, yes. Ie oxygen onboard, etc...

FYI, Canada is also included with US as not needing to reclear security at AMS.

KLM state they require 48 hours advance notice:

Contact KLM CARES at least 48 hours before departure if:
  • You need to arrange assistance at the airport during boarding, disembarking and/or transferring, or to get through the airport

That is a blanket boiler plate above the list for all assistance types provided. Wheelchair assistance can be requested at anytime, even at the gate. They like having 48hrs notice. Helps if flying to say PVG where could need a buggy to load or unload if at a bus gate. However legally if you request it at airport they still must provide it.

The wife and I arrived AMS in Aug this year and actually booked the wheel chair (sic) service from the plane ( D1 cabin service) The only wheel chairs meeting the Delta flight were for jetway deplaning.(we walked off) After which we got aboard a buggy at the end of the jetway who checked us off by name. The buggy made seveal stops to let off passengers who were on-going on later flights, while we stayed aboard all the way.to baggage (via passport control).
Later in August we returned again to AMS from Prg and since we didn't have a jetway we were met by wheel chairs on the lower level, Again we only needed to get to baggage.

What I got out of this is that it is a very long haul from the arrival gates to baggage claim and if one has trouble walking, a wheel chair or other assistance is easy to book and well recommended.

so check your gate assignments etc. and book accordingly.

Also we are booked again through AMS on Delta next May, connecting to a flight to the NCL UK. I'm assuming that we still have the distance to passport control and then to our outbound flight concourse and closest lounge to navigate ?

The UK is outside the Schengen treaty area. You won't clear immigration at AMS, but rather in the UK.

No, you won't. You are arriving from the US and do not have to reclear security. You'll deplane into the departures area of the gate that you are coming in to. The UK is not within Schengen, so you're flight to NCL will leave from the same international departures area. There is no immigrations, just a walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Your KLM (I assume) flight to NCL usually departs from a D gate. Your inbound DL flight usually arrives at either a D or an E gate. Both the E and D concourses are a couple of hundred meters long and the walk in between them is another 70 meters. If you're lucky, your new gate might be just across the hallway from your inbound gate. Worse case scenerio is arriving at the furthest E gate, and leaving from the furthest D gate. In that case, you're walk is approximately 1200 meters, with most of that distance covered by moving walkways.

Same concourse should be no problem and we'll beat the buggy even walking slow.

We expect to have enough time to hit a KLM lounge, so I am assuming there is one at the term end of the D concourse?

No, there is a single large KLM lounge for the entire international departures area. This is located in the main terminal building, in between the E and F concourses (on the top floor, one level above the departures area). The lounges at AMS have numbers, so follow the signs to "airline lounge 52", which is the Skyteam KLM Crown lounge. If you're inbound flight arrives at a D or E gate, turn right when you enter the main terminal building (aka the "Holland boulevard").

In between the entrances to E and F concourses there is an elevator on the left side that takes you up to the lounge level. You exit the elevator on the opposite side, turn right, past some construction work (they're still expanding the lounge) to the entrance. If you're coming in from the F side, take the escalator up to the lounge entrance as soon as you exit the concourse.

You can reach the start of any concourse (in the international, non-schengen area, so D, E, F and G gates) from the lounge in no more than 5 minutes, or less if you're a fast walker. From there, moving walkways take a normal walking person to the furthest gate in no more than 5 minutes. So max 10 minutes from the lounge to any gate.
