Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

Liquids and gels (including beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel etc.)

Following items may be carried on board:

Prescribed liquid medicines essential for the flight (if verified as authentic)
Insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines
For those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk and sanitary items essential for the flight

KLM and NWA encourage customers to allow additional time before their flight.
Customers traveling are encouraged to arrive at the airport three hours prior to departure.
Customers should also expect to be asked to remove all shoes at security checkpoints.

Customers not complying with the above can not be accepted for travel on KLM and NWA flights. KLM regrets any inconvenience caused.[/COLOR]

Thanks for that. Aren't computers also allowed as part of carry-on for the AMS-US flights?

Or is it going to be more draconian on AMS-US flights than US-AMS flights when it comes to carry-on luggage?

Items on this list do not match the restricted items listed on NW's website, wherein there is no mention of mobiles, laptops, iPods or other battery-powered items.

The list above is specifically for the UK. The NW site refers to TSA regulation that affect US travel mostly.

Since NO carry-on is allowed to and from the UK the AMS site is correct. That includes all electronic equipment. You are basically restricted to id paper, BP only (not even books are allowed).

But carry-ons to the UK are generally allowed. It's from the UK where there are far more issues.

AMS Connection Question

With the kid doing a year abroad in Scotland, I am searching for reasonable alternatives between EDI and BOS. I just did the trip via DL and ATL, and truthfully, I felt that many hours were added to the trip. If I were the book my daughter EDI-AMS-BOS, which looks like about a 1+20 connection or thereabouts, what is involved in the connection? Can the transit be done without passing through passport control and/or security? Does KLM in EDI give you the boarding pass for the NW AMS-BOS flight? I assume that luggage is checked through to BOS.

Thanks in advance for sharing your KL/NW expertise and advice!

NW / KLM connections in AMS are generally very easy.

Checking in at EDI, KLM will be able to check luggage all the way through to BOS and print boarding passes for both segments. NW/KLM are very well integrated across the Atlantic.

In AMS, arriving from the UK you will have to go through passport control. Then prior to getting on the flight to BOS, you have to go through security at the gate, as with all flights in AMS. 1:20 doesn't leave any time to hang around, but it is a very do-able connection. I do it routinely.

AMS is a great airport. Very easy to get around. My in-laws did the same trip not long ago and had no problems getting there in time.

I'm pretty sure (somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure) that only connections between Schengen and non-Schengen countries require clearing passport control. Since neither the UK nor the US is a Schengen country, your daughter should NOT pass through passport control in AMS.

She will, however, go through an extra security check at the gate for the US-bound flight.

1:20 is plenty of time unless the first flight is horribly delayed. I've made AMS connections (with my bags) in under 25 minutes when the inbound flight was delayed. AMS is a great airport to connect through. Be sure to have your daughter pick up a slab of gouda in the airport on her way home.

Once with a 3 hour layover, I went through passport control, took the train to Amsterdam central, had some spacecake, got back to the airport, and caught my connection.

I think that's correct. When I fly from PRG via AMS onto DTW I never go via passport control in AMS. Both Czech Republic and USA are non Schengen.

Really???
And a lot of EQM's were added also????

Easiest routing is BA/AA via Manchester or BA/BA via Heathrow.

Of course, if you are married to Skyteam, then AMS is much more desirable for a connection than using AF via CDG. Non-Schengen to non-Schengen is an easy connection, though it could be quite a hike from D Concourse to E Concourse at Schiphol, depending on the actual gates involved. However it can easily be done with 1:20, IF everything is operating on time that day.

This is correct. As long as you stay on the "sterile" side of the airport you will not pass through passport control. That said, you should give yourself 45 min - 1 hr to clear security which happens at the gate.

Well, as it stands now, you aren't allowed to leave EDI or anywhere in the UK with much more than a spare pair of knickers, so she shouldn't have much to clear at the gate. What is involved in the gate security? I have done DL flights to JFK and ATL from AMS and IIRC, there was secondary screening at the gate with security questions etc. I can't remember whether hand lugagge was Xrayed again or just examined.

You have questioning, then xray and metal detector before entering the boarding lounge.
