Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

Can't answer specifically, but the good news is, if it's not enough time, you get to go on the longer connection flight for the cheaper price Or stay a night in AMS, I guess...seems like a win-win.

I wish it was that way. But the longer connection time was the one going to AMS. It's actually ATL-DTW-AMS-BOM. There is an earlier DTW-AMS flight but that is >$900 more expensive. There is only one choice for the AMS-BOM leg.

I wish I also had the option to stay overnight but my meeting in BOM can't be moved.

I haven't had any problems before on long connections and the flights were always on time. But I know that it is possible that the one time I decide to take a short connection is when it bites me.

I guess that answers my question but wanted to know how others have fared with short connections in AMS.

If DTW-AMS is on time, no problems. You do not have to go through AMS immigration. Just need to go directly to your gate. And it will not be that far to walk.

I usually find that DTW or MSP flights to AMS are on time if not early.

Short enough connection that, while legal, would make me exceptionally nervous.

It just enough. In case your flight arrives late to AMS, you ll be rebooked to the next one to BOM

If not leaving the non-schengen side of the airoport, 50 minutes should be plenty. I've done non-schengen to schengen connections in that amount of time, but I walk fast.

Question though: why are you having to fly ATL-DTW? I'd be more worried about that leg. There are 3 flights a day from ATL to AMS, 2 on DL, one on KL. Sometimes one of those flights is the plane that actually flies the DL AMS-BOM leg (DL 50).

Also KLM can get you there via DEL on 9W which probably isn't the most desirable backup plan, but they might rebook a delayed passenger that way. 9W isn't Skyteam.

I just realized that KLM doesn't fly AMS-BOM but delta does. I'm sure there is some good reason for that...

On a similar subject

I have a 1:50 connection, coming from JFK-AMS and connecting to AMS-PRG. Landing at 5:15 or something. Sky Priority. I'm thinking there's plenty of time to make the connection, but is there likely to be enough time to shower? And oh yeah, will the lounge even be open at that hour?

http://www.klm.com/travel/us_en/prep...lounges.htm#p1

Lounges open at 04:45. Someone with access to KLM's lounges would have to comment on how long the wait for showers is. Or you might consider posting in the KLM forum here.

Short connection times are easily doable at AMS if one is going from non-schengen to non-schengen as in your situation, you are coming in from the USA and are going to India.
Same thing happens when pax arrive from BOM and then connect to the 8am flight AMS-DTW.

Wait for showers in my experience has been between 15 minutes to 30 minutes in most times i have traveled through AMS.

Keep in mind that there will another complete security check at the gate for the flight to BOM. Usually reasonably quick.

I booked an award ticket in J that I was excited to get at the "low" level. The outbound flight is JFK-AMS-ARN.

I realized a few days after booking that the connection in AMS is only 30 minutes. I don't know what the MCT for AMS is, but I know it must be more than 30 minutes. It seems like the most reasonable alternatives are (i) a later connecting flight to ARN, creating a 4.5 hour layover, or (ii) the non-stop JFK-ARN, which I would obviously prefer.

Just to be clear, there wasn't a schedule change involved. It was 100% my fault for booking this without checking the connection time more closely. I obviously now need to change the award, but is it reasonable to ask for the the non-stop flight without an increase in miles (it is at the "high" level)? What is Delta likely to offer?

If you miss your connection in AMS, is there another flight reasonably soon thereafter?

If so, I would consider leaving things as they are. If you point out the connecting time problem, they might just cancel your flights without replacement.

As far as whose fault it is - you are a civilian, not a professional travel booker. If the website lets you book it, and DL issues a ticket, at that point it becomes Delta's problem, not yours. If the website allowed you to book a stopover where one was not allowed, or priced your flight too low and issued a ticket, you wouldn't say it was your fault. Same thing here - you are a consumer, you went a consumer - oriented website, and you booked your flights and tickets were issued. End of story.

When things go awry

If you arrive late, or are delayed getting off plane, and your connection looks tight (like less than 30 minutes) you can get tied up at Passport control. There is a line for close connections on the left of the area, if it should be backed up. It's quick and easy if there's no line, but it's good to know you can get expedited if you look to be close on your connection.

This seems to be an issue with DL.com. Last summer I was traveling BOS-AMS-TXL. The flights I wanted in low involved a 25 min connection. Called DL, who said technically I could buy it and call back and due to the illegal cxn they would change my itinerary at no cost Called back and changed to the earlier BOS-AMS flight which was only available in high!
