To the OP, when I was on a DL buddy pass several years ago, I was given a brochure from the DL employee about what to do and how to handle yourself when using a buddy pass. One of the things it said (I have since lost the brochure) is do not discuss this subject on a public forum, brag about what you paid, etc.

I did a google search and found this:

http://travelinfo.delta.com/dlnonrev/Buddy_quette.pdf

READ "HAPPY LANDINGS PORTION" ABOUT POSTING ON FT.

This is from DL, and it does not state everything the brochure said, but it is something. Again, talk to the employee that gave you the pass.

Unless I missed something, the link you provided never mentions FT. It mentions "You should also refrain from posting negative comments regarding a Buddy Pass travel experience on social media sites, blogs or forums, such as Facebook or Twitter."

Posting on forums regarding negative comments regarding a Buddy Pass travel experience has nothing to do with the question the OP is asking.

Posting on forums regarding negative comments regarding a Buddy Pass travel experience has nothing to do with the question the OP is asking.

As I stated, when I used a buddy pass (never again) a few years ago, I received a brochure from the DL employee that gave me the rules for flying on a buddy pass.

On the link I provided it states:

"You should also refrain from posting negative comments regarding a Buddy Pass travel experience on social media sites, blogs or forums, such as Facebook or Twitter."

What is FT? I know he/she is not posting anything negative, but the person to ask these questions is the DL employee that gave the OP the buddy pass.

To the OP good luck getting business class on a S4 buddy pass. I live in LAS and I would put the odds at 45-1. Please post back after the trip. I hope you do get business class. Being from Vegas, I put my money on not. Like red/black, odd/even, non-rev S4/ upgrade DM.

Happy travels. :)

The odds are not 45-1, since the employee chose a flight that had much availability. In addition the employee has good seniority, which as mentioned above, increases chances. This employee manages to give the buddy pass to his friend who goes abroad all the time, and this person gets C class almost every time, because the employee simply knows what flights to pick. I did Spain in 2009 and got C class both ways around same time of the year. Hawaii was harder and did not get C and had to stay overnight in ATL.

Also, this isn't really summer. School is not out anywhere. Nobody takes vacations in the beginning of May.

Finally, on calling me a freeloader, that is fine. I spent 2 months studying and acing the very hard FL bar exam, and certainly will take advantage of any opportunity that exists to visit another place. I will not and do not feel guilty at all. DL is the most profitable airline in the world, and it is a great treat that they offer this perk. I know how to act, and in fact don't even drink, unlike most people

OP, please post back and let us know if you get business and how it was.

Ignore the childish envy on here from the vast masses who are simply incapable of paying for the service they desire. They mask their financial shortcomings on here with outrage for something they simply can't afford. Your friend is entitled to that perk, and you are entitled to everything that comes with it...be it C class or Y. Most on here don't know of what they speak. If they did, they would realize that a buddy pass and traveling at an S4 priority is not a walk in the park (and about the same fare as a 21 day advance purchase coach). Enjoy the flight! I hope you get BE.

I also hope the OP gets business. As stated before, he/she needs to talk to the DL employee and not post on a public forum.

This is one of the perks airline employees receive to give to friends and family to make up for the low pay.

I believe a S4 pass falls at the lowest level, but before other airline employees traveling on DL, except on an emergency (death in the family, etc.) Even retirees come before this pass level.

Again good luck and happy travels. Please report back.

And yes, airline employees deserve these perks, dealing with some of the a-hole traveling public I see on a daily basis. It blows my mind how some people treat ticket/gate agents, and FA's.

How they put up with this crap day after day is beyond me. So let them fly for free and their "buddies" for a low price. It is a great benefit. I've done one Buddy Pass, never again. If I was in college or retired, hell yea!

This shouldn't be a problem because employees are only supposed to give the buddy passes to people they know very well and trust. If you can't ask these kinds of questions to the Delta employee you know, you might reconsider traveling on their buddy pass. They are your only source for accurate information. [Source: I know employees from various airlines, the rules are all quite similar]

The hostility you may face here is because this forum is mostly filled with people who pay (sometimes large amounts) to fly Delta, often don't sit in business class on international flights, and may direct that envy/jealousy towards someone who is very publicly asking for details about sitting in business class for a very low amount of money.

I think there can also be a suspicion that if someone cannot ask the DL employee that is the source of the buddy pass, then then buddy pass might have been purchased in serious violation of DL rules.

Contrary to your belief, I can tell you that the next week is actually one of the most popular travel periods due to shoulder season pricing going through may 15. On May 16 prices go to peak season pricing and jump in some cases $500+++. So while you may not think it is a busy time, it actually is quite popular because many colleges are out and leisure passengers can save thousands by traveling now versus next week or in a couple of weeks.

With that said loads look pretty heavy on both ATL and JFK-MAD this week. Not sure what day you are traveling but the advice I always give to my parents who would be ahead of you (S3B) would be to go on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Good luck but you really should be directing your questions to the employee whose buddy pass you are using. Interestingly enough we just received a memo from our top dog in HR a couple weeks ago talking about pass abuse and the creation of a new team on the lookout for fraudulent activity and activity that violates the policy so hopefully you are legitimately using the buddy pass and not buying them from a broker or anything.

Actually, my point exactly.

GUs and SWUs are/were the only way for Medallions to get upgraded. Don't begrudge the nonrev for a perk they have earned for a dreamed benefit that was never there.

The 50% of the flights JFK-SFO that I was upgraded on last year is a bubbashow value of "never". People who understand English would disagree.

In addition to the purchaser of the buddy pass risking it being invalidated and being stuck paying a very expensive walk up fare to get back home which is probably more than a round trip discounted J purchased in advance, doesn't the employee also risk some serious disciplinary action by the airline?

Seems too risky for either party IMO.

Yes, for the employee, something like loss of nonrev privileges through termination.
