Another option that is available to you now is flying Continental to Cairns, Australia in Business class for 120K miles. This, however, would involve the somewhat awkward routing of your city to newark or LA to Honolulu to Guam to Cairns... a lot of flights, but a reasonable value for the miles and they have good Business/First class service. Also, how would I use Skymiles on Continental to go to Cairns? I didn't know I could use them on other airlines. Thanks for all answers and advice! |

Though I do not quite understand why it falls under the Business rather than BusinessFirst column since to my knowledge that is a CO flight and not a NW flight. As to mix and match, you can mix and match all SkyTeam members. Though they may start letting you mix and match CO and NW before they announce it like I did on ST before the official announcement. CO and NW will be part of ST sometime in September, so then you can mix and match DL KE CO and NW. |

I had one award itinerary which combined Delta Air Lines, Alitalia and Air France to go to France, Malta and Italy, for example. This is detailed in my yet-unfinished long trip report. |
Isnt DL a partner of SQ? Why not travel down under in style?

Best advice I've gotten anywhere! Thanks everyone! :D

I tried for a business class award on CO to Cairns and there were two problems. First, the agent could not find any availability the entire month of April 2005. This seems to be a common complaint about CO awards. Second, the agent said that the routing through Guam requires over-nighting, as the inbound aircraft does not get there in time for the outbound on the same day. He said that because of this, it was not a very popular award.

DL miles for SQ awards may be used for Singapore (and I think as far as Bali) but not for Australia (the DL clerk tells me that's how their agreement with SQ reads). An award for a NW flight would be possible, but they fly only as far as Bali, not to Australia. |
Using Skymiles to Austrailia.
I'd like to burn my miles (biz class) and fly to Brisbane Australia. Does anyone know if this is possible using Skymiles? Thank you.

I heard the only way to use miles to get to Australia is to do it is using CO via Guam to Cairns. Very strange route and difficult to arrange connections.

Using Skymiles to Australia
The only way is to use Delta miles is on Korean to Seoul and then another ticket from Seoul to Brisbane. (I don't think you can do it all on one award ticket). There is also a Continental flight thru, I think, Guam on to Cairns, but it is a terrible schedule involving layovers, etc.
Bottom line is that there is no way to get to OZ directly on Delta or any of its partners. I've searced every decent option for years, and the only option was when Delta and Air New Zealand partnered 8 or 9 years ago. Best bet is to start accumulating United miles thru their VISA offer, etc. and buy a B class ticket and upgrade--15,000 miles each way. |
