I have a very simple solution to this first world problem. Yesterday was my 2,657 flight with Delta (including SkyTeam partner airlines) and I have never once checked any luggage.

I'm at about checked baggage about 10-15% of the time.
Much of that are oversize items and long family vacations.

When self-tagging started (10-15 years ago), I was super excited. The "expectation".
Then "reality" came.

In fairness, that entire check-in area is quite unnecessary. I’m not even sure how you ended up there in the first place as that is not in the normal traffic flow at LAX. It’s really more for people “in the know” who want to skip the main checkin area on Level 2. I rarely see anyone in that area aside from one or two DL employees.

Sorry for your experience, but I don’t think it’s that common. I checked a bag at the sky priority checkin line last month without issue.
The upstairs check in area will fit in with more traffic if the long delayed APM and Consolidated Rental Car Facility ever opens.
