Compensation question

DL 338 on 31 Mar was delayed 4 hours from FLL to SEA.. The flight was diverted to a stopover in ATL to get a fresh crew. The original crew timed out due to ATC flow control from another flight

I was told by ground staff no compensation or meals will be provided because it's ATC related . Is this accurate?

For others, as it wasn't clear to me- the stop in Atlanta is scheduled for 80 minutes, so no overnight in Atlanta.

Delta is not obligated to provided you any compensation.
Note that there were massive storms up and down the East Coast today.

Delta's policies for compensation are provided here: https://www.delta.com/us/en/change-cancel/delayed-or-canceled-flight
A delay of your length only entitles you to compensation or accommodations for issues "within [Delta's] control"

Thank you , no overnight in ATL . I'm not convinced crew scheduling isnt under Deltas control. It's not like the entire US was blanketed by storms and no advance notice. There were no weather related issues west of fll and the plane arrived here from Seattle and other carriers from FLL left on schedule .

In the end, it doesn't really matter. There's no mandatory compensation laws in US outside of Involuntary Denied Boarding due to Oversales. Do you really want to fight DL over a meal voucher?

Imho Wether I or thousands of delta pax decide to pursue compensation is matter of individual choice. Maybe Deltas "commitment" to delays and cancellations should be made into something more than just advertising

Airline pilot here: Sorry to hear about your delay today. No one likes it when things go sideways. But please understand that things are often more complicated than they might seem and that planes and crews come from all over and any disruption - anywhere in the system - can have ripple effects all over. A storm on one side of the country can easily have impacts on the opposite coast. It’s just the nature of the beast. And I say that as someone who spent the day deadheading and encountering delays myself at work today.

By policy no compensation or meals are due in this case. But, if you have a skymiles account you can submit a complaint and they will likely respond with some good-will gesture miles for the inconvenience.

THe lack of weather west of Fort Lauderdale is irrelevant. That's not how airplane travel in the United States works. It's also untrue.)There were widespread delays yesterday across all carriers, particularly in the Southeast. FLL was hit badly.

Take for example the evening flights on American to Dallas: one was cancelled, one was delayed 4 hours.

I'm sorry the weather on the East Coast yesterday caused you and hundreds of thousands of other passengers inconvenience If you want guaranteed compensation when weather causes issues, you should perhaps not fly in the United States

Yesterday was a challenging day with a line of very bad storms that went right through ATL at midday, and then continued marching east just in time to mess up the NYC and DC airports during the evening rush hour. In the Sky Club, right after an LGA flight cancelled, I overheard a woman venting on her phone to someone (presumably in NYC) saying "That's (expletive) ...they said it was weather ... you say there is no weather there" and I wanted to turn my laptop screen towards her and show her the weather radar over the northeastern US.

Like weather, ATC delays are not under DL's control.

They could have avoided the delay and stopover in Atlanta by just canceling your flight instead. They found a solution to get you there, albeit later than planned.

Listen, it's frustrating, I know. Especially when the ATC issues aren't even in your route of travel. But the east cost was a mess yesterday and DL has major hubs there.

I, for one, spent several hours on a diverted plane on the tarmac in Boston yesterday flying from Europe to NYC because of the storms. It happens.

It's a four-hour delay. Did you have material losses you need to be made whole for?

sunil Apr 1, 2025 2:55 pm

Thanks for the responses ! Flight eventually made it to SEA at 4AM about 6 hours late.

Check with your travel insurance to see if the delay qualifies you for reimbursement for expenses due to a covered delay.

Virtually everything into and out of FLL was delayed or canceled. The afternoon flights on AA to CLT were delayed 4 hours and one cancelled.
