Hotel for 13 hour layover AMS

Hello all,

We have a 12 hour layover on our return flight to the US. Flight Purchased from Delta... Incoming flight is IST to AMS (operated by KLM) arriving at AMS at 7:35 PM. Departure them to ATL is at 8:25 AM from AMS to ATL. Would we qualify for free / discounted hotel at AMS? If so how do we go about getting this. We have previusly done this with Emirates at DXB.

Thx

None of the US airlines provide free/discounted hotels for overnight layovers. It's all on you.

Although there are no free / discounted hotels provided by Delta, the Citizen M, Sheraton, and Hilton are all walking distance of the AMS terminal for an easy layover.

I've stayed at that Citizen M three times. It's the funkiest hotel that I've ever stayed at. So cool.
Seems that there's a Mercure hotel (French chain) inside the terminal but it has special rules about who can stay there. But I think connecting passengers qualify and you can't leave the airport.

The Hilton that is connected by an indoor walkway to the terminal is a very pleasant place to stay (I've stayed there on overnight layovers at AMS). A little pricey (and no discount of which I am aware for passengers on an extended layover [because that's probably 50% of their business]), but convenient.

The Citizen M may not be everyone's cup of tea - I don't know if this is universal, but the rooms I've stayed in have had [plexi?]glass tubes for the toilet and shower [as opposed to a bathroom proper]. It's a perfectly nice hotel, but have a decent look at some photos before you commit.

I like it, my wife doesn't. The room is managed via a provided iPad. If one doesn't have electrical adapters, there are a couple of120v USA outlets. Check-in is via terminals in the lobby so you don't have to wait on line.
The toilet and shower enclosures are made from privacy glass so you're not visible to anyone else in the room when using them.
II wouldn't want to spend days there but I find it to be fine for an overnight layover.
Lastly, it is a short outdoor walk and there is overhead cover on the walkway.
If my wife's with me, we stay indoors and go to the Marriott Sheraton.

I've had some overnight layovers at AMS and used hotels for which I've had free night coupons from various status.
Sheraton is a connected walk from the terminal. Awakened twice during the night in error by calls from the front desk.
Also Hyatt Place and Holiday Inn Express, both of which have shuttles to and from AMS. Both were typical for the brands.

Yes, should have mentioned it's obscured glass. My wife was fine with it, but we've only used it the once.

why wouldn't you just go to the central business district?

I've done much shorter layovers there. Train, Taxi, Uber...

Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal Station is a 16 minute non-stop train ride; very easy to access the city.

Any experiences with the Yotel? I have a shorter layover soon -- thinking about a day room there.

Yes - it was great - I took a 3-hour nap after falling asleep to Friends on a tiny TV - and took a shower afterwards to look refreshed.

Downsides - it's basically like sleeping in a trailer, and - at the time - the noise from the KLM lounge construction was loud - but Bose headphones for the win)

Kind of felt like a hostel or brothel, too. But that's for another day.

OP is arriving from IST which is non-Schengen and must clear immigration upon arrival. Arriving in the evening with a morning departure I believe they want to rest / sleep before their early (8:25 AM) departure to ATL. Most likely, possibly something to eat and a decent night's sleep. Probably up about 4:30 -5 AM ad back to the terminal by 6 - 6:30.

IMO, If they're on a budget and/or inquisitive, CitizenM would be fine and if they want more space or don't want to experiment with the funkiness, the Sheraton or Hilton is their best bet.

meh. I lived in AMS for 2 years. Unless Yotel, leaving terminal and clearing security sucks regardless of where you sleep.

or budget..

but if theyve never been to AMS - and Ive regretted not going into many cities when marooned at airports - this is a missed opp. AMS is a hoot.
