Delta One Upgrade Pricing

I usually am happy with Comfort+ upgrades on international flights (platinum status). However, a few months back I went with Premium Select on some flights to and from Asia since the prices were reasonable.

Now, I have had opportunity to make upgrades to Delta One on flights to and from Europe. A DTW-AMS flight was $1200 to upgrade, a AMS-ATL $1300. I jumped at both. They are far below the usual price, and considerably lower than Premium Select to Europe.

Now Im curious. Is Delta trying to lure to me to go with Delta One in the future? Is this typical? I usually dont bother to check Delta One, given the astonishing prices Ive seen in the past.

That still seems a tad bit high compared to the lows I see, but you got the cash, so why not? Is it on an A350?

The lowest I've seen on Upgrade With Miles from coach is $900-1000, but on A330-300 (still a very good seat)

I don't consider their "usual" $3400 upgrade offers serious so those don't count/

A few weeks ago, my wife and I were offered upgrades to Delta One from JFK to Copenhagen (on a 767-300) for 64,900 miles each (I don't recall the dollar option).

The mileage amount is just the cash offer at 1 CPM for online seat upgrade offers. For domestic itins, they subtract out the 7.5% domestic US Excise tax on the cash offer before converting to miles. For international itins, they just round up the mileage offer in 100 mile increments after converting from cash price at 1 CPM (so the cash offer in your case would have been something like $648.XX).

Not an upgrade but some remarkable DeltaOne pricing:

I am planning a trip to Spain from 12/27 - 1/08. No flexibility because I’m taking my granddaughter who has to be back to her college by 1/10. I have been randomly checking prices, planning to fly PS. On one of those random checks last week I snagged DeltaOne tickets for BOS-MAD and return BCN-BOS for $2157 each. The D1 price was lower than PS.

BOS-BCN/MAD deal was posted in Premium Fare Deals forum -- DL/AF/KL: BOS-BCN/MAD $2150 through May 2024
Unfortunately, it looks like these D1 fares have been pulled. Best you will do on BOS-BCN/MAD now are some heavily seasonally restricted D1 fares starting at $2611 roundtrip.

I was very lucky to catch it when I did, before it was pulled.

The D1 price is now ~800 but PS is down to ~200, but this was the price I was being offered a few days ago.

Since fares on TATL/TPAC international routes are asymmetric and based on point-of-origin, it's probably safe to assume so are the buy-up offers.

Not always: If they think they can sell it for a full D1 price (and that is very high for SYD-LAX), you will not see an upgrade offer.

And sometimes the price of PE + upgrade offer is more than buying the cheapest D1 fare.

They are basically treating original fare as a sunk cost with the FCM upgrades and assume people only look at upgrade cost when deciding whether or not to purchase upgrade (and don't really factor in what they originally paid for fare). With someone flying for business where employer pays for original fare, this is literally true. With a leisure flyer who paid themselves, the original money they put in still has value but DL is likely assuming most people don't really look at that and fare differentials. And if DL can get them to pay more for FCM upgrade purchase than paying fare difference price, it's a win for DL. Convenience is likely a factor here since you can just select a seat with the FCM upgrades while paying fare differential requires you going back through change flights, and reselecting flight which is not so convenient/obvious to people.
