I remember late 90's early 2's ATL to LAX and back. Hot meals (even lunch) in economy and a choice of either a small sirloin from Omaha Steaks or chicken. Then some kind of problems and meal service went kind of sideways. Remember those little lunch bags you picked up at the end of the jetway? Then trying to sell sandwiches (Atlanta Bread?) at the gate? Enter, buy on board.

It's changed a lot!

I think the last free "meal" I remember in Domestic Y was back around 2003 from SLC-ATL that was a "Little Blue Bag" offered as we entered the jetway to board. Sandwich, chips, cookie, etc. Seems like shortly thereafter things transitioned to buy on board wraps, snack boxes, etc.

So we know Delta offered complimentary meals on competitive transcon routes right up to the pandemic, and they apparently offer them today on ATL-HNL… Any opinion on if/when they will be reintroduced on those transcons? Do we really think Delta will not offer economy meals on the new JFK-HNL?

Chips, cookie and a sandwich are much more then Delta is offering on BOS-SEA and JFK-SEA for example. That qualifies as a meal for these purposes IMO, much better than a bag of pretzels

Hot meals require ovens and storage space for both the meals and trash generated. Not all transcon aircraft have that ability.

I never said anything about hot meals - just meals (sandwich included). The meals were also cold pre-Covid

Post pandemic, US airlines are charging full carrier prices for low cost carrier service.

Frankly, it's odd to see AA uniquely offering something in Y (their current cold snacks/meals on premium transcons) when it's not just to match a competitor (which of course in the past was almost always DL). I guess the question is whether DL feels the need to match AA's current offering, or if they think their brand halo (likely somewhat tarnished for those of us on here since COVID but not necessarily to the general public)-- or AA's somewhat negative brand equity these days-- is enough to stay competitive.

I miss those cheese burgers Continental used serve before they were bought out.

MSP/ATL/JFK/DTW-HNL and ATL-OGG get comp meals in coach. SLC-HNL/OGG are meals for purchase in coach.

This link indicates that meals will return, at some point in the future, on transcons.

An interesting snippet from that is:

A return to fully complimentary meals for economy passengers on longer domestic flights (i.e. transcons) is also in the plans, but Delta is not quite ready to deliver that yet. As a first step, however, it expects that the Flight Fuel fresh meals will be offered to passengers in Premium Select on a complimentary basis beginning in December.”

Isn’t the PS cabin on transcons still being sold as C+? Not sure if he really meant C+ or if there’s something else in the works to be announced.

Probably related to this: JFK-HNL & ATL/SLC-OGG to get Premium Select
which also has speculation that PS is bound to show up on the D1 TCONs as well.
