The 2pm departure from ATL to TLV is interesting. When it last ran, it was a late-night departure from ATL, and arrived in Israel in the evening. Could be due to aircraft rotations.

IIRC the yields on the route weren't good, and it was around that time that several routes to Europe & Africa that were duplicative out of both ATL and JFK were cut in favor of only JFK service (CPH, ARN, PRG, ATH, ACC all used to be at least summer-seasonal out of ATL, but now only ATH still is. The rest are only served from JFK).

Really surprised to see ATL-TLV back. maybe the A350 economics tipped the scales back in its favor.

Ok hopefully some blogger will not grab this post. But in the past I have been able to get two biz class seats on AF for LAX>PPT and then three more biz class seats on Air Tahiti for the same aircraft and time so my family could all fly on the same plane together. So that is my little secret to share with flyertalk. Soon to be ruined by some blogger who will take credit.

No actually, United announces IAD-CPT, not EWR.

No, AA does not have announced CPT or JNB.

UA announced IAD-CPT in addition to an existing EWR-CPT service.

If I recall, the flight originated in AKL, making AKL-JFK a one stop direct journey. But it never seemed to pick up enough traffic. French Polynesia is super expensive, and skews toward a narrow band of leisure travellers. Almost every other island nation in the south Pacific is less expensive--and many are just as gorgeous (Cook Islands in particular).

However, it appears the route wasn't viable as it was subsequently discontinued.

Thanks for the tip but I’m afraid the “Want to get your family to Tahiti on miles AND on the same flight? Click here and we’ll show you how!” Articles are being written up already.

The US and South Africa don’t have Open Skies; each side is limited to a number of frequencies. For now, all the allowed frequencies between two (that can be operated by US carriers) have been taken by Delta and United; in fact, the DOT had to work some magic with the South African government to procure another two weekly frequencies beyond those allowed by the bilateral for these latest CPT flights by UA and DL.

AA could try but it would be difficult to get additional frequencies without a renegotiation of the bilateral…

I think you just got lucky. AF availability on LAX-PPT shows online, and while I don't have much problem finding dates with availability for coach awards (currently 45K one-way with a 60-day advance purchase and 47K with a 21-day AP), I'm seeing very few dates with business class award availability. I did manage to find a few dates in January and the award level for AF in business is currently 100K miles with a 60-day advance purchase. However, they don't seem to always show consistently (sometimes they will show for a flight, but when I repeat a search, they no longer show for same flight). It may be possible you can find an agent who is better able to find availability -- but it will likely require a some patience and probably multiple calls. Air Tahiti availability does appear to be visible online at all from what I can see and will also likely require multiple rounds of calling to book anything (most people are simply not going to put in that much effort to book an award).
