Refunds Delayed? Showing up as eCredit (Unused eTicket)?
I had a relatively last minute 2 day trip MSN<>MSP planned for last month. It then got changed to 1 day, so I cancelled the first ticket I bought under the 24 hour cancel policy and bought a new one in a refundable fare bucket. The day of the 1 day trip came and the outbound flight was delayed 4 hours due to a mechanical. I cancelled that flight before I even got to the airport when I saw that I wouldn't have enough time in my destination to make the trip worthwhile, due to the long mechanical delay. I presume because it was a refundable fare, or because of the long delay, but I was able to cancel online and request the refund to the original payment as well for this ticket. I received cancellation #'s on both refunds and have screenshots showing I picked "Refunded to original card" during the refund process and not their tricky attempt at getting you to accept an eCredit. I know they do this and specifically made sure I didn't let that box be checked.
Nonetheless, it's been 3 weeks and both tickets have not been refunded to my Delta Amex. I know the wording is 2-3 weeks but I've never seen a refund take longer than 2-3 DAYS. And certainly not 3 weeks. And I don't recall them ever showing up in my account as eCredit (Unused eTicket) while the refund waited to be processed. Is there any chance that even though I have screenshots of checking the refund to original form of payment box, that they gave me eCredit's instead and as far as Delta is concerned the processing is done? I'm not conspiracy oriented but this seems shady? I KNOW I put original form of payment on both tickets during the refund process.
I'm not doing a DYKWIA, but I'm a seasoned travel so I know how this works and this is definitely different. Never had an issue with 24 hour cancels taking 3 weeks to process the refund. This is a system that doesn't require human intervention. The second one is a bit more complex. I shouldn't have to dispute with my Amex esp. since they may hold that against me.

Thanks for the thought and effort in your very non-obvious reply.
I asked because I wanted to understand current sentiment and experiences of other customers. And if they are taking a month to process then to know to just wait instead of calling a Diamond Medallion line that begs me not to call unless Im traveling within the next 72 hours.

Until refunded, it will show as an ecredit as unused eticket still is active. Only the reservation gets canceled right away.

This has happened to me on a couple trips (refundable fares) where the refund has to be processed manually by the Refund Department - with those trips, there was an involuntary schedule change, so the system can't automatically process the refund. I messaged Customer Service and they assured me that the refunds were in queue but that it might take longer than 7 days ("up to 3 weeks") because there's a backlog of refund requests. There should be a refund request number attached to your refund. Note: the frontline agents seem clueless - they thought that my tickets were nonrefundable so I asked to get transferred to a specialist.

I would put my experience into two buckets
tickets that were cancelled within 24 hrs of purchase, those seem to go right thru, my guess is because there isn’t much to verify,
tickets for a cancelled or excessively delayed flight they take time and I see no real pattern, sometimes it is a week and sometimes it is three weeks so I can only imagine it really is about how long the processing queue is at any given time. I don’t think you will learn much by calling other than it is being processed
