Advice for July 4th wknd booking NYC-TPA
Hi
I have an afternoon flight 7/1 jfk-tpa and tpa-jfk on 7/5 evening flight. I booked main cabin points .
There are multiple flights every day from JFK and LGA. Am I better off at JFK??
Am I better off with the 1st flight out? Or Last flight on thurs 6/30.
Should block for a flight that’s almost full?
Was considering purchasing first class, does this make it harder to change?
I need MQD’s. But if that flight changes don’t really want a credit.
would you book backup 2nd miles ticket,
I hate to see my points go down LOL
Thanks

departing either JFK or LGA on a summer afternoon is a crapshoot in terms of potential weather issues, and on a holiday weekend it'll obviously be more chaotic than usual
in IROPS, I have to believe status will carry more weight than being in F ... that said, many recovery options are likely to be totally sold out in Main or C+ but still have one or two F seats available, so you might want to be creative and look at alternative routes like NYC-BOS-TPA (or alternative airports like SRQ or RSW)

I would just suck it up and hope for the best. This will start a whole other discussion, but if you book duplicate flights in your name on the same dates, Delta will likely catch it.
If everyone starts booking backup options this summer, the flights will be even more full and no one will get what they want and prices will get even higher.
There, let the crap fly!

Early morning out of NYC is better (since JFK/LGA are hubs, easier to swap in a crew/plane).
JFK seems MARGINALLY better than LGA; due to runways.

OFC book backup ticket to a different airport and layover overnight. So many flight cancellations and delays will occur on July 4th weekend. Its better you dont fly in the states during those days and go elsewhere more interesting

DL has been having serious cancellations issues for the last 4 or 5 weekends in a row (it wasn't just a Memorial Day/holiday weekend issue). They made a public announcement they were reducing flight schedules for July and August by 100 flights a day about a week ago, so hopefully the weekend cancellations will better under control by July.
