Delta Meltdown 4/2/2022

Delta is 5th in the world for cancellations today behind two Chinese airlines and Southwest/American. More than 200 flights cancelled and still half of the day to go. Weather seems to be very mellow across the country except for central Florida. The three connection carriers are doing great. Mainline out of pilots again?

I have a feeling it's going to be a brutal summer.

Yes, I was hoping Delta would provide an alternative to Alaska. Not much different, although 11% of AS flights are cxl today, DL 8%.

So then shouldn't AS be #5 and DL #6? Or are the ranks based on total number of cancelled flights rather than the percentage of scheduled segments that are cancelled?

I was going by number of cancelled flights but FlightAware has both: https://flightaware.com/live/cancelled/

Alaska is 11th worst in the world for number of flights cancelled today.

Spring (IIRC a LCC/ULCC based in mainland China) is setting quite a record with 83% of its flights cancelled today. They're second in terms of absolute numbers (444), behind MU.

So, according to the link provided, American, Southwest, Spirit, Allegiant, JetBlue and Alaska all have a higher percentage of flights canceled than Delta. Not a good day all round.

Are they mostly due to weather, or something else, or unknown?

Flew out of ATL international F terminal early this morning. Complete chaos. Lines everywhere, no one in charge. My flight got cancelled. No one from DL to talk to. Security lineup was very reasonable. No weather issues.

Huge storms across Florida. According to the Flightaware link, Orlando and Tampa are # 1 and 2 for cancelations worldwide and Miami is # 4.

Still a zoo this afternoon. after I landed from AMS was planning to go the E SC and the line was out the doors into the terminal. Headed to B instead where my connecting flight was and same thing. Told to bypass the line to get into the club because people were waiting to get ticket issues fixed (probably 50 deep in the SC hallway). The agent manning the entry door at B said it was a problem with the ticketing system.

The mainland China cancellations could be military exercises (which close or restrict the airspace, especially around PEK) or the current lockdown in Shanghai, where MU is based.

For MU it’s probably cancelations of their 738 fleet? As far as I know those are still all grounded pending the crash investigation. It’s close to or over 100 frames.

WN did a computer upgrade last night that screwed their weight-balance calculations this morning. Then the weather in TPA, MCO and the rest of FL. AS is having pilot issues.

Flew PVD-ATL-MEX this morning. All on time/no issues.

Florida weather has been crazy today.
