103 Diversions from ATL

I just checked the handy Jettip.net diversion tracker and there are 103 planes currently diverting away from ATL. A quick search suggests ground stop due to winds.

Diversion airports: BHM (11), CAE (11), CLT (11), TYS (8), GSP (6), MEM (6), AGS (5), CHA (5), JAX (5), HSV (4), BNA (3), MGM (3), MSY (3), PNS (3), SAV (3), CHS (2), GSO (2), MCO (2), MIA (2), TPA (2), FTY (1), IAD (1), MGE (1), MYR (1), RDU (1), TLH (1)

This is turning into quite the event. Some birds which diverted and took off again for ATL are diverting again. New Ground Stop in place. Some Delta flights are at Dobbins Air Force Base.

Still going on, theres pancakes at all the arrival gates. Looking at the TAF it may be an issue for tomorrow too. Strong NNW wind gusts forecast.

We pushed back on 2112 ATL-ECP earlier this evening just as the ground stop was issued. Ultimately waited about 30 minutes, then taxied out and departed, landing about an hour behind schedule. It was a sporty takeoff, but honestly was expecting worse.

The immediate return flight ECP-ATL (also 2112) Im seeing is diverting back to ECP after holding at an arrival gate for a while.

Glad I made it out of ATL when I did!

We landed around 3:30 and took off around 4:15. No problems at all.

The diversion airports are a bit interesting. MSY took some diversions from Mexico while MCO and MIA took some diversions from the islands and central america. The usual suspects, CAE, CHS, HSV, etc seemed to have taken most of them.

Definitely windy for an hour or so at about 10 PM last night. A quarter inch of snow 15 miles south of the airport this AM. Worth a picture.

I've decided to panic and fly to Tampa in a few hours.

Anyone know how DL1802 ended up at Dobbins? Seems very weird to me.

At one point last night the diversion tracker was showing two other flights diverted to general-aviation fields: one to Falcon Field (FFC) and one to De Kalb Peachtree (PDK). Anyone know what flights those were?

Im guessing this is why I'm now sitting in the D1 cabin aboard one of the old B763s Instead of the previously scheduled A333. 😔

Ah well, can't complain too much. It'll be fine for the 4.5 hour trip to ATL, assuming we don't get diverted. 😀

That's interesting since they have to be able to disembark passengers and put them up eventually.
