Note that US flights to Canada are treated exactly the same as US domestic flights from a taxation perspective (it's only the return flights from Canada that are subject to a bunch of additional taxes). So there are some differences from changing international origins which will almost certainly result in some tax calculation changes.

In any case, yes of course status can help. But the point is, it can be done if the airline wants to do it.
It says DL-exDM under your username. I don't know how long ago that was nor when you did the Buffalo shuffle, but your post suggests that it wasn't very recent.

Just in case someone comes across this via search..

DL phone agent escalated to "support". Support would not let me move to the SXM-JFK nonstop. The phone agent said that "support" said this was because AXA-SJU is operated by 3M. But, "support" found a better connection via SJU.

Yes, I'm aware of AXA-MIA. That ends up being a lot more flying time going to NY -- and AA appears to be sold out on the day that I'm travelling.

Was your ticket bought directly from DL? (not via a TA) Also was it sold as AXA-JFK or AXA-SJU and SJU-JFK?

Makes a big difference in what airline can do. If was AXA-JFK DL would be responsible and could change and reticket. However under the latter,, DL is only responsible as far as a TA would be for the 3M flight.

Part of bad advice is that you state you were flying DL. Just because you bought a ticket from DL doesn't mean you're flying them. If they want, they can sell seats on UA flights on DL tickets. If they do, they're doing so as a TA would. UA policies, not DL would apply.
