Delta Christmas 2021 COVID Related Cancellation and Delay Thread

Does anyone know why this flight is already delayed and if it will stay delayed? Inbound is arriving on time tonight so seems strange.

Could be crew availability-related. For example they may have had to reassign crew to this flight who need to fulfill minimum rest requirements from their previous flight

I am sure somebody knows why as of now it is flagged as delayed.

But I suspect nobody knows how the story plays out tomorrow. You are at a hub, so DL has plenty of ways to swap crews and equipment around overnight.

Nothing to do but keep an eye out.

Are they having crew issues again? My Christmas Eve transcon just canceled.

DL is currently at 39 cancellations while UA is at 47 according to Flightaware. B6 and AS look to be in similar territory percentage wise. I'd say there's some possible staffing issues here, but wouldn't exactly call it a "meltdown" yet.

DL also issued a weather advisory for SEA for the 25th and 26th, while AS (and AA and UA) have not yet. They're only expecting a wintry mix transitioning to some light snow.

edit: looking through the already cancelled flights for tomorrow and Saturday, it looks like transcons, ATL-Florida, and hub-hub are primarily being impacted right now.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas meltdown. I was going to surprise my mom tomorrow night but Delta ruined it. How many holidays has this happened now? Don’t worry though, Ed says everything’s fine.

Oops, that's for today. For tomorrow, DL is currently at 43 and United is at 97 (about 5% of UA flights). They are both at about 20 cancellations for Saturday currently.

Yes, 44 cancellation is a meltdown. They suck when happen, but just because a few happen doesn't mean a meltdown. As xiloper notes, UA has twice as many currently.

DL is also proactively offering free rebooking for SEA/SLC flights for 25th/26th. Sounds like they doing a good job trying to get people where they want to be.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a good job. Normally, when I buy a ticket I want to get to where I want to be WHEN I WANT TO BE. I don't think that is an unreasonable expectation.

edit 5:48: up to 79 tomorrow (17 more cancels in the last 11 minutes). it's beginning to look like a christmas meltdown.

edit 5:56: TPG is reporting on the cancellations at UA: https://thepointsguy.com/news/airlin...cancellations/

My late evening MCO-ATL Christmas Day flight got canceled and was rebooked to a morning Christmas Day flight (which won’t work) so had to reschedule to the 26th.

The cancellation numbers are climbing fast. Now 77 today, 80 tomorrow and almost 90 on Saturday.

Sounds like proactively preventing a meltdown.

Sounds like proactively attempting to contain a potential meltdown. The beast is clearly on the verge of escaping if this many cancels are already happening.
