Question re: upgrade with Miles on Air France

I have searched for an hour and I cannot find the answer to my question, so I'm asking for help.

I am going to travel Premium Economy from CDG to LAX on 12/25/21. It is an Air France operated flight. (AF #0076)

I can purchase the ticket with Delta (code share) or directly with Air France. The ticket is the same price on both sites. If I want to maximize my chances of upgrading to Business Class with miles, is there an advantage of purchasing the ticket with Air France? (I have both Flying Blue miles and Delta SkyMiles.)

Ive never heard of upgrading on AF with miles. The best you can do is to apply a GUC if there is Z inventory on the flight, and it doesnt matter if its a DL or AF code on the flight in that case.

That said, the GUC upgrades directly from Y to J so you will save yourself some money if you just book Y as opposed to premium economy.

There is mention on DL website of being able to upgrade AF flights with Mileage Upgrade Awards on Y/B/M coach fares to Premium Economy and Premium Economy fares to Business. But don't recall any reports here on people being successful with this. Not clear if marketing carrier matters.

  • For flights marketed and/or operated by Air France/KLM, Mileage Upgrade Awards may be used for a one-class upgrade when the paid fare class is Y, B, or M.
  • For Air France-operated flights, Mileage Upgrade Awards are available from Economy to Premium Economy to Business only on transatlantic Joint Venture flights between U.S. cities and Paris (CDG and ORY).

Its possible but require purchasing the non-cheapest fares. YBM to move to PE and (I think) A or G to goto Business. Note this from memory before COVID. I'm not sure if can go straight from Y to J since GUC now can also go straight from Y. (You used to have to buy A or G fare class PE fares to upgrade to J on AF using a GUC)

You can also wait till checkin, where online or in app you can upgrade fir X amount or equivalent amount in FB miles.
