Question on lounge rules

We flew last week DTW-AMS. Hubby is platinum member. Used miles to buy flight. We have the Delta Platinum AE card. I thought we had to pay for lounge access ay $39pp, but when we went into the lounge in DTW they told us that my husband and 1 guest was allowed in for free. Is that because we flew international? Will we be able to use the lounge here in AMS on our return flight home? Wondering the rules here! Or maybe we just got lucky in DTW!??!

You were correctly allowed to use Delta's SkyClub because your husband is a SkyMiles Platinum member (and, by extension, at SkyTeam Elite Plus member). This grants him and one guest access to the SkyClub while traveling in any cabin on a SkyTeam international flight (excluding the Caribbean, Guam, Saipan) or a SkyTeam domestic flight connecting to/from a same-day international flight. On your return, you will be granted access to the Crown Lounge 52 due to his Elite+ Status.

To expand of this answer, all DL GMs and above have SkyTeam ElitePlus status.

Also, AMS has a Schengen lounge (IIRC Crown lounge 25, on the mezzanine level) too, which ElitePlus (plus one guest) can access in connection (pun intended) with a KLM or other SkyTeam operated Schengen flight.

Thank you both! So we can go to lounge 52 or lounge 25? We will be departing from AMD headlining to DTW!

No, they're on different sides of passport control. If you're departing from AMS (versus arriving into AMS on a KLM flight from a Schengen country in Europe and then connecting to the AMS-DTW flight) to the USA, you won't be allowed into the Schengen departures area.

Did I miss something? I never read what class of service they were traveling. Would that also allow guesting?

Any international flight for Sky Team Elite Plus (GM,PM,DM) pax provides access for one guest regardless of class of service.

In a rare case, the DL website is clear on this one. See : Sky Club access

No. J passengers do not get guests (at least, not by virtual of their class of service)
