Delta On Time Performance 2021

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics put out June 2021 on time performance numbers today.

Delta: 13% late, average delay 63 minutes, cancel rate 0.01%
United: 24% late, average delay 66 minutes, cancel rate 0.18%
American: 25% late, average delay 79 minutes, cancel rate 3.4%
Southwest: 34% late, average delay 60 minutes, cancel rate 3.3%

The hold times and lack of food are certainly frustrating but Delta is doing a good job running the core aircraft operation. I'll post the July numbers when they come out. I suspect they will be worse but probably less bad on Delta than others.

Do you have the total number of flights? The percentages are more or less impressive depending on if they had 10,000 or 100,000 flights.

I knew Allegiant are always late all the time. Unacceptable. They must be on-time and don’t delayed. Get it act together! Do the best!

Is anyone else surprised at the number of United flights? I always thought the big 3 were more or less comparable in size.

I believe United always had a bigger portion of their flying as long haul international, which explains a lot when we see these numbers, given current demand and restrictions.

Also, WN is always going to win out when it comes to sheer number of flights but the other metric that’s usually used when comparing the US 3 is ASM (available seat miles), which factors in the length of flights.

July numbers are out and once again Delta performed much better than any of its competitors.

Delta: 15% late, average delay 68 minutes, cancel rate 0.08%
United: 28% late, average delay 70 minutes, cancel rate 1.34%
American: 25% late, average delay 77 minutes, cancel rate 1.67%
Southwest: 30% late, average delay 54 minutes, cancel rate 1.65%

I believe United has historically also had a larger portion of its flights completed by connection carriers like SkyWest.

On time performance really only matters for the flight you are on. If only one flight in the month is delayed but it is the one you are on and that causes you to miss a connection, it becomes a problem. You really don't care about the other flights that were on time.

That isn't the point. The point is the broad numbers indicate relative chances.

Unless you believe that your presence on the flight has a direct impact on its arrival time, then this comment is pointless.
