Especially after a red-eye flight, one appreciates a SC, for instance if one has slept through the "breakfast" served on board. Of course, it's nicer if the SC showers are open too.

SCs aren't only for originating departing passengers or, to make the point more emphatically, the ATL SCs aren't just for customers who live in ATL. There are a number of flights that arrive into ATL very early and would have a lot of connecting passengers.

There seems to be a SLC arrival AT 5:25 am and LAX AT 5:444 AM. LVCs are likely to be sitting up front and therefore off the plane first. Even if the flight isn't early, it's easy to get to a SC door before 6 am.

Other than in a few case how many people are likely to be affected daily with the line being closed in the wee hours

Someone mentioned upthread that ATL SCs are opening later now too. No SP or SC early in the morning at ATL.

Some business travelers need or prefer the very early flights. Leisure travelers not so much, but they will pick them when the flights are cheaper. It's probably generally a consumer-friendly move since (with reduced travel due to COVID-19) DL has the required aircraft capacity (even with some planes parked in a hot dry place) and doesn't need to use every plane as many hours as possible every day.

While I'm definitely part of the majority here that doesn't think this is a big deal as long as the regular line isn't long, let me play devil's advocate. With an advertised check in time of 2 hours prior to your flight, and the first bank of flights not departing until the 7 o'clock hour, wouldn't one expect the SP line/desks to be open at 5/5:30am? I think that would be the case especially on busy travel days like Monday and Friday mornings. Just my 2 cents.

I would not agree that in the midst of a staffing crisis during a global pandemic, that the SP line/desks not being staffed at 5/5:30 AM represents "throwing in the towel", "giving up", or "a new low". It's an inconvenience.

I could be wrong about this but I think relative to its scale, ATL has less O/D traffic than other major hubs. Would make sense that the early AM flights need to arrive from the spokes before it makes sense to send most out to the spokes again.

And Monday morning, I'm on the redeye arriving from SLC at 525 am. Maybe it will take a long time to find a gate?
The SkyClub at RDU opens at 4 am, but the first flight out is at 5:25 I think.

Not if the flight is early and you got your upgrade and are first or 2nd off the plane. Can be a 30 minute wait if you are departing from the same concourse that you arrived on. If you have a long change - say E to Term, then you can prolong the stroll.

By contrast, the MSP F/G SC opens at 4:15 am while the one in C opens at 6:00 am, according to the DL app. IME (preCOVID-19) MSP TSA airport security seems busiest around 6 am, with many business travelers originating at MSP preferring the earliest possible flight in the morning.

I Guess delta has decided all three passengers who find that 30 minutes vital aren't worth the cost
