Delta extends medallion status through '22 Medallion year

Big news as our 2020 status continues for another year.

https://news.delta.com/delta-extends...dallion-status

MEDALLION MEMBERS:

  • Medallion Status for 2021 will be automatically extended for the 2022 Medallion Year.
  • All Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) will roll over to 2022 to qualify for 2023 Medallion Status – for the second year in a row.
  • All Members will continue to earn toward Status on Award Travel through Dec. 31, 2022 – extended an extra year.
  • All Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates will be extended for travel through Jan. 31, 2023.
  • Members who earn Status in 2021 will receive additional benefits, as a special thank-you for their continued flight activity: Starting Feb. 1, 2022, those who earned 2022 Status will clear for Complimentary Upgrades ahead of those at the same tier level whose Status was automatically extended, and Platinum and Diamond Medallion Members who have earned Status will be able to select Choice Benefits.
  • All current Delta 360 Members will be able to enjoy their exclusive Membership in our annual, invite-only program for an additional year through Jan. 31, 2023. All Delta 360 Members will be able to select Diamond Choice Benefits.

A nod to the people who were flying since the announcement says that "earned 2021" status will beat "rolled over 2019/2020" status with all other things equal for the comp upgrades.

Wow so I guess I can cancel my MR coming up in 2 weeks. That locks up Platinum for 2023. No need to take advantage of the MQM Accelerate program to build up a rollover anymore.

I did "earn" Platinum this year thanks to 50k miles of rollover, 12.5k MQM earned from the DL AMEX Plat, and a handful of trips this year so sounds like I'll get the Choice Benefits for this year too.

Having lost critical international trips again this year, this is a move of no small importance for me.

Yeah, I had a fun trip with buddies planned for September, but was already waffling as the delta variant spreads and I have unvaccinated little ones at home. This puts another tick in the push-to-2022 category for that.

What if we "earned" 2022 status because our 2020 MQMs rolled over and we spent $25k on the Reserve card?
Either way, the rollover from 2022 will keep Platinum thru 2024 now without much effort. I really wish they would have reduced Diamond waiver to $25k (but I understand why they wouldn't do that).

When everybody has status, then nobody has status.

Wow, well at least earning status in 2021 will help in the upgrade race....especially since I have a shot at Earning diamond in 2021 thanks to accelerator!

Whatever miles i dont burn through in 2021 I will definitely burn through in 2022!!

They say that those who actually earned status in 2021 will get higher UG Priority.

I have also earned Platinum for 2022, so that will be an extra set of choice benefits for me.

I think I will still take my MQM run next week since I will be riding the 764 from ATL to SAN and back.

This move seemed inevitable given the moves being made by AA and UA, and the looming wave of Delta COVID infections. It is quite possible that fall bookings are going into the toilet. I think we are looking at a grim fall and winter, though I really hope I'm wrong.

I will crawl out on a ledge here and predict that Delta will make a one-time adjustment to the MQD thresholds, at least for Diamond. Kind of like the cut line for professional golf tournaments, I think they will come up with a lower MQD number for this year to preserve a certain count of Diamonds. Say (for example) a 2021 MQD threshold of $9000 for Diamond status.

It is interesting that those who earn status will be prioritized for upgrades over those who had status carried forward. That should be a fun exercise for the Delta IT crew!

edit: Wondering if my 16 drink certificates that expire on Friday are going to be extended.

As someone who will earn Diamond butt in seat even without the accelerator, I appreciate the higher upgrade priority. Hard to find fault with these moves.

Since international travel are down this makes a huge difference - with the MQM accelerators we will have a lot of Diamond/Plat next year

That's my same MQM run too (except it's toward the end of August) -- 764 on the way out, 763 on the way back, used up what I thought were my last 2 expiring RUCs earned in 2019 but now those might be good through 2023 so maybe I want them back?

I also will be curious to see if the vaunted DL IT department can pull off prioritizing some DM / PM over others. I call BS but you never know.

I can just see it now -- the threads popping up next year about the PM/DM who "earned it" this year being passed over on the upgrade list for a PM/DM that didn't "earn it"

Also sounds like if you don’t actually earn the status, you won’t get a new set of choice benefits.
