Why do they need more 739s? They have hundreds more aircraft on order in the 180-200 seat category with the remaining A321ceos and the A321neos yet to be delivered but nothing in the 140-160 seat category? I’d assume they’d need to order either used 738s or A320s to replace the aging 30 year old PMNW A320s DL still has in their fleet.

Hopefully not. I definitely prefer the A350 over the 787. It's what I love about DL. Airbus fleet all the way!

indeed.

Would this even make any sense from a maintenance perspective? Better to have fewer variants and maintain an all Airbus fleet for lower costs?

The newest -900ER currently at Delta dates back to mid 2019. The 737 will be part of the fleet for a very long time. There's a reason the four largest US airlines all have hundreds of 737s.

The oldest 737 was delivered September 2013. That makes it almost 8 years old, so if and when they do decide to refresh the cabins, I hope that the cabin isn't as densely configured. DL's 739 really isn't a comfortable plane to fly on, except for 21A/F.

Because Delta's fleet renewal strategy is not about a 1-for-1 replacement; the airline has been on an upgauging trend for a while now - they have never ordered any A320NEOs so far, but have chosen to go with all-A321NEOs to replace an wide array of aircraft; they have significantly reduced the 50-seaters and replaced them with 76-seaters on the same routes; the larger 76-seat RJs have been replaced by 100+-seaters on many other routes; they have chosen the A339s (but not the smaller A338s) to replace the 763ERs; former 763ER routes are being upgauged to 764ERs or the A339s, etc. So it shouldn't be a surprise that they are sticking with the larger-gauge aircraft for subsequent orders...

This. The problem isn't the plane model but how the airline chooses to configure it. CO had its 737-900s configured very comfortably if I recall, with a mid-cabin lav. And AA took the A319 and made it a hellhole, except for a tiny F cabin and maybe the exit row.

9 across in Y? Delta Y seats on the A330/A350 are 18 inches wide. The 787 is 17.2" wide on AA, and 17.3" wide on UA. No thanks.

The 787 and A350 aren't competitors. The 787 is a replacement for the 767 and his a competitor to the A330. While the A350 competes against the 777.

In Delta's defense, no one is ordering the A338. There's only 15 orders for the -800 vs 331 for the -900. The -800 just isn't that great of an aircraft.

For real? It's the first time I've heard of that. Mind explaining more?

The A350s wouldn't be a bad acquisition to help replace the 777 fleet, at least they come from a reputable airline.
I’m almost certain LA’s A350 have the same seat as the current TK 777’s expect on LA it’s 2-2-2 instead of 2-3-2. Curious if they did take them would they reconfigure these to the D1 seats.
