Most of the CR9s can accommodate a limited number of full-size carry-ons (provided they are not bulging and you haven't used the expansion zipper). Gate agents will usually pink tag these but if I'm one of the first passengers to board I usually remove the pink tag while walking down the jetway. If you're in first class, the FAs will usually let you use the closet which can accomodate a few large carry-ons. If you're boarding late, you should definitely gate check.

Note that CRJ often means CRJ-200, the fifty seat all coach version. CRJ-900s are a different beast, with the CRJ-700s oviously being in between. When the CRJ-900s were first introduced, GAs were begging people to take luggage on board and made long speeches reassuring customers that these new smallish aircraft indeed had big bins.
On DL schedules, you should see CRJ, CR7, and CR9 IIRC, with some here calling the CRJ = CRJ-200 the devil's charriot.

B717 are mainline aircraft. No issues there. CR9/7 will have no issue as long as your bag isnt oversize. As other user say, no zipper expansion, etc. CRJ (200) will need to be gate checked. Main issue on CR9/7 is that theres limited space. Even in F if you're late to board there may not be a spot. Some crew will allow F to use cabinet. However not all will.

I fly on Delta's CRJs often and my TravelPro standard carryon fits the side of the plane that accommodates the bags (left side as you board). Most of the time the gate agent requires that I put a gate check tag on it anyway. Some flight attendants have insisted that I not even bring it on board and I'm not looking for an argument so I'll gate check it just to get on with it.

Most CRxxx won't fit what people use for carryons due to the height. If your can squish it in the bin opening to get it to fit, it would have to be put sideways. Basically, just assume it will not fit and has to be planeside checked and picked up in the jetway at arrival.
What is why I love the E700/750 etc since it is a much more comfortable cabin and also has full size bins.

I agree, that's always the safe choice. But, if you are flying a CR9 and you board early and your suitcase is not bulging at the seams, you can assume it will fit. I've done it probably 15 times without any problems. For me, that's a much better option, not just because I save 10 minutes on arrival, but because I know the contents of my bag are much safer in the overhead bin rather than the cargo bay.

Honestly had I known I probably would have just pink tagged mine to avoid the hassle of swimming upstream to retrieve it during deplaning, I have nothing of value in there. My personal item currently resides in the forward closet. Im not very experienced with regionals so Im not sure what the pink tag protocol really is at this point outside of the CR2 which can accommodate precisely nothing and I doubt those have changed at all in the last decade.

In fairness, I’m sitting on a full CR9 right now and was one of the last to board. There was still a space for my bag, albeit behind me (I’m in 1A and my bag is in the first row of C+). I didn’t notice any pink tags available at the gate, however I didn’t spend any time there (walked straight from the SC onto the plane during final boarding). Once actually getting to the boarding bridge I saw a dozen or two bags which were pink tagged waiting to be lowered.

Lol, I mean, in fairness I came off a 739 so the day could only go up from there. The T4 ramp was a hot mess though, 35 minutes sitting on stand after departure time because of a traffic jam on the ramp as the captain described.

In my experience, GAs will generally try to pink tag every rollaboard if the plane is a CRx. If you know your bag fits and you prefer to keep it, you can try to negotiate with them (but it's much easier just to say "thank you" and then remove the pink tag once you get into the jetbridge).

There exists smaller Embraer jets, but they aren't in DL's fleet. I don't know what their bins are like
