Why do A319s make a buzzing noise?
I've been flying A319s a lot lately, and they all seem to make a loud buzzing/groaning noise when the engines are throttled. It starts on takeoff and persists through the flight. I previously thought that it was related to some piece of plastic in the cabin that was loose and vibrating on one particular ship, but every A319 I've flown in seems to make this noise, making me think it is something else, and the Mrs. seemed annoyed by the sound last time. I seems like it comes from somewhere in the cabin instead of the engines. Does mtrainer90 or anyone else have some insight as to what that annoying buzzing sound is?

Because they’re like 20 years old.
I totally agree that sound is so weird |
A CFM issue maybe?
FWIW - the sound is not alone with Delta's A319, but other Airbus A320 models as well... |
It's complex, but essentially the fan blades at takeoff power are moving at a supersonic speed and create a shockwave.
And it's not unique just to the A320 family. |

Haha not just the a319, most of the current airliners that I can think of.
The large fan blade has that sound from the A320 series, 747, 777, 767, etc with their large fan motors. Have you been on an a319NEO? That fan noise is almost gone and the engine incredibly silent if sitting up front. The "geared turbofan" allows for a slower-spinning giant front fan that makes for much less noise. Jets like the 727 and Md80 had it minimally, you could hear the "whine" of the jet engine when far enough forward on takeoff. The sound of a "real" jet, IMO. This "buzzsaw" noise, as it's been described, will likely go the way of the dodo eventually with the newer-generation geared turbofan jets. Wait 20 years or so, you'll rarely if ever hear it. |
I love that sound. The sound of power!

Well, this is new. Was thinking this might be another "barking dog" noise complaint about the A320.

Just wait until you get on an A220 and get to enjoy the song of the whale.

Then there is always vibration in the cabin from tuning to the engine rotating parts frequencies. This usually get sorted out early in commercial service based on passenger complaints. Solutions vary from insulating the cabin sources to having the pilot spend less time at the specific engine operating condition.

'cause they don't know how to hum?
