I went through Delta's stored B767-300ER frames and found 4 others with the same engines as the ones that were bought by Amazon from DL: N394DL (built-1995, last location ILN/2020-Mar-25), N176DZ (built-1999, last location VCV/2020-Nov-06), N1605 (built-1999,last location MCI/2020-Mar-09), N16065 (built-1999, last location MCI/2021-Jan-07). The last three are about the same age as the 7 Amazon purchased from DL all ready. Looking at Flightradar24 at N16065, it appears to be in the process of being activated, 3 cancelled flights from MCI to ATL and another one scheduled Thursday tomorrow.

AA has always liked small aircraft. Piedmont especially flew ATR till just couple years back and even now 145s are common.

I'm curious if this is more about getting pilots, than planes.

Piedmont flew Dash 8's not ATRs and they stopped 4+ years ago. Executive flew the ATR down in MIA for American and that operation shut down in 2013.

Dash 8s/ATR, both are turboprop. The point is still that AA does like small aircraft. Piedmont especially. AA still has significant E145 operated flights. However despite this like, My guess is this is about pilots more than planes. AA has started operating "bus" flights and from what I've read/heard, they doing quite well. No need to waste pilots on small cities with low counts.

This will be good news for smaller cities. You can hate the CRJ all you want but it's better than losing service all together.

I agree with this 100%.

Granted, I personally would prefer the E45.

If Delta ordered 150-200 E45s tomorrow I'd be pretty happy if they were only going to be used for small markets. I think so many people are happy to see the end of 50 seaters because the airlines of the 2000s were using them to replace mainline flying in major markets. But the way the legacies have been using 50 seaters for the last 5-7 years, I'd be totally fine with the continuing. With the small but fair addition of mainline carriers actually paying the regionals enough to have the staff to properly clean them and do some quality cabin maintenance every now and then.

DL 717

I saw one parked at the Madras, Oregon airport along with some from SAS. They are being converted to aerial fire fighters.

I think you may have seen MD-90's, not 717's.
