SLC airport currently shut down - Earthquake Damage 3/18/20
Salt Lake Airport is currently closed. Apparently there was tower damage among other things and they are assessing everything now. We woke up to 5.7 Earthquake along with several aftershocks. The hits keep coming.

Yikes. Hasn't even made the national news on the networks. Hope everyone in SLC is fine. This is just the last thing people need right now.

Pipes from the fire system in the older terminal (still in use) broke and are flooding the concourses.

I live in downtown Salt Lake, and thankfully, it's a new building, so there's been no damage here. But between the initial quake and the aftershocks, it hasn't been a fun morning.

It woke me up. Very scary. Especially with coronavirus already having me on edge.
The public transit train system is shut down, so the Green Line trains to the airport are also suspended. There are power issues citywide that are affecting TRAX, and they also have to check the tracks for damage. |
And yet, Delta hasn't posted on their site that flights out/in of SLC are temporarily not going...
I thought I was just a little "just woke up" dizzy when it hit - then I heard the rumbling... |
What an opportune time. Hope everyone is fine and safe!

Does anyone know where the inbound flights already in the air are being diverted to? Provo and Ogden could each handle a few flights each, but I assume that most would have to divert much further away.

The airport director is on TV saying they've sent everyone, including employees, home; they sent passengers not from the SLC area somewhere off airport, but didn't say where. They're going to have to check for damage, get employees back, and resweep the secure area before they reopen. The director said it'll be reopen in "hours, not days," but if you have a flight here today, I wouldn't count on it happening. I can believe it'll be reopen by tomorrow.

I believe one of the main reasons for the terminal rebuild was that the current terminal wasn’t up to seismic standards. Hope everything is okay there!
