I'm in total agreement. Not sure you quoted the right person.

I assume this is for main cabin and above, correct?

No. Any cabin, any fare.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if people ended up booking more travel with increased flexibility and the change fees never came back? One can dream.

Thats certainly nice that DL updated their policy for all future travel booked this month. Will be planning to book some trips even though I don't have solid dates due to the situation. The flexibility is greatly appreciated.

If it so happened, the change fees would be inevitably included in the fares. Already now given this, expect airfares to be notably higher after this ordeal than before, as airlines ensure that pax changing flights "for free" end up paying more for the very same flights, same fare class, on different dates, as they are no longer charging the change fees, so they make up for the lost revenue by across the board fare increases. (Of course, it's a lot more complicated than this, but expect the lost revenue recovery to be a significant part of the revenue management equations used here.)

No matter how it goes, the consumer is going to get fleeced. I mean, that's just how airlines operate.

I'm doing the same. I bought a ticket in February to a conference in mid March, and the conference was just cancelled. I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more of that in the next few weeks.

This is what it means to book a Basic Economy ticket.

If DL is offering a waiver for a flight it applies to all fares, including E fares. If there is no waiver, I would not expect a favor.

Also even if the OP did purchase a Main Cabin fare, they would still loose $200 of the tickets value if there was no waiver.

That seems to be a problem since the travel dates have to be before April, but that may change as things develop:

Change Fees for International Tickets Purchased on or Before March 1, 2020

  • Affected Customers: All International Tickets (not including travel within the U.S. 50) issued on or before March 1, 2020
  • Impacted Travel Date(s): March 1, 2020 - March 31, 2020
  • New Ticket Must Be Re-issued On/Before: May 31, 2020
  • Rebooked Travel Must Begin No Later Than: May 31, 2020

If you're not covered by the waiver currently, I recommend waiting another week or two as it is likely that DL will have to extend the dates to include April flights.

Any idea how this policy might work for an 006-coded ticket booked from Expedia on Z fares? (It's to Cape Town, but just wondering)

What are Expedia's rules and fees?
