Skipping last INTL inbound leg at ATL with checked bags?

I know this has been discussed before, but Iím currently airborne on DL83 CDG>ATL (nearly 10 hours in flight!!!). Our final leg to HSV is only a 30-minute hop, but we have a >5 hour layover. Even if we are able to SDC/S to DL1250, thatís still a >3 hour layover. Instead, Iím just going to Uber it so we donít have the >1 hour trip from HSV to home tacked on as well.

In short, we want to snag our bags at immigration and leave the airport to drive straight home.

I *believe* this is possible, but need confirmation and any tips I should know.

We arrive at Terminal E.

Thanks!

As long as you are not doing this on a regular basis you will not have a problem with Delta.

Not really worried about DL, just need to know if itís a simple matter of just leaving the airport with your bags?

I believe there have been some previous threads on this, read Post #2 in this thread.

For flights that arrive at E, the only exit from immigration is through TSA, so if your checked bags can be taken through TSA you are fine. Otherwise you will be forced to re-check them to HSV.

This -- and there's no way around it like there is at IAD / ORD / LAX / JFK / etc.

We tried to do something similar -- except we wanted to get on a much earlier Southwest flight back to RDU while our ticket on DL had us headed to GSO on a long layover (it was a cheap flight to BRU out of DL on GSO only, RDU wasn't in the fare sale). Unfortunately WN doesn't have a re-check drop-off (at least they didn't when we were in this situation) and there was no way for us to get landside with our bags so we were stuck having to just re-check our bags to GSO and fly to GSO.

Thatís what I was afraid of. One is a smaller rollaboard, the other is a big 60-pounder. I doubt thatíll go through TSA.

I supposed I could try, but I wouldnít bet on it.

Read through the salient parts of the referenced thread. The sucky part is that our layover is 5.5 hours, just about 30 minutes under the CoC exclusions where we could fetch our checked bags.

bummer.

You might be able to ask a staff member if there's a way out to landside, even if you have to be escorted there.

An Uber from ATL to an hour outside of HSV? Wouldn't that be $250-300?

I (and others) once were able to leave a US preclearance area in another country due to IRROPS. Airline and airport staff had to escort us out.

If you were arriving at F, this would be no issue as all bags are sent to the same carousel and you can easily just walk out afterwards. Arriving at E on the other hand is a bit more challenging since your bags will be sent to the connecting carousel and there is no way to get back landslide without re-clearing security.

Query whether DL might not cancel the final segment and waive the likely fare difference. If so, the bags are checked to ATL and that is the end of it. Seems worth a call to ask. Phone agent won't understand the local logistics at ATL, but a quick explanation of what you want to do might well get some sympathy.

I just looked and it looks like the OP’s flight has already landed at ATL and actually arrived at Gate F8 (not E), meaning the OP can just grab the bags and leave.

Someone in DL flight ops must have been reading this thread and changed the arrival gate
A nice "Welcome home" for OP.
