Same flight number going and returning?

I'm on flight 2740 RDU-FLL then same flight number on the return. I've never seen this. Flight is not until December.

It's been this way for at least a year. In most cases the crew flying both directions is even the same. Not enough flight numbers.

It's like an infinite loop.

I see it often on flights that run DTW-AZO-DTW. It can be quite amusing to track them on FlightAware when the first leg gets delayed somehow.

See it all the time on ATL-TPA-ATL.

Just about all cities have these. You'll see these on routes where crew can make it to city and back to hub same day.

KL has this even on routes where crew has to stay overnight

2 main reasons for this:

1. Uses less flight numbers from a finite list available

2. Allows the carrier to file one flight plan instead of two

Only happens on Groundhog Day. ;)

See it all the time on LAX-DCA. Usually same crew as well doing the inbound/outbound.

AA2405 is MIA-ANU-MIA.

How can one flight plan cover two flights?

Not 100% sure on that still need a new release new paperwork for weight and balance fuel etc plus we'll need a new clearance from atc.

Perhaps number 1 applies though.

They still file two plans.

FAs, maybe (I experienced that ~12 years ago ATL-ONT-ATL); I’d be surprised if the pilots work back-to-back TCONs
