GUCs WaitlistóDTW to CDG

Hello!

My husband and I are flying to Paris from Detroit on June 23 this year. The GUCs were not available so they put me on a waitlist. Anyone have any experience with them clearing for this route?

Do you HAVE to travel on the 23rd?

Best to call and be flexible with dates to see what will clear immediately. June is smack dab in the middle of the summer travel season. I would wager a guess that your odds of clearing a waitlist are less than 50/50.

Tuesday is good but X fare is not if it goes to the gate.

Z2 and Z0 don't look good, although both flights are empty in C+ and coach.

I've used GUC a couple times on that route (wish they still had the 747 on that route, was great sitting in the upper deck) in the summer.

You need to be flexible with the dates and helps if you are flexible with the routing. I've always been able to fly back on a sunday on the DL non stop CDG/DTW. Flying I usually have to connect, once was MSP and another time was IND.

From the begin/middle of June many French students go back to France, and also many peoples travel for holiday to France (when their kids are off from school)

My understanding of GUC waitlisting is that if seats become available before check-in, then it's based on medallion status, then time of request as tie-breaker. (with most GUC applications being DM, time of request is the majority factor, IMO)
Fare class only comes down to the T-24 stressful predicament....meal choices, sleep patterns, extra baggage availability, etc...all come into play and while nice to get a battlefield upgrade at the gate, it would be nice to know the former availability before hand.

That being said, I have limited experience with GUCs applied for TATLs....the Mrs and I (both DM) usually reserve them for TPACs. But of our TATL GUC attempts, we've cleared:
- 1x BNA-AMS
- 3x AMS-BNA (daughter companion...actually, 3 of our daughters came back with us, they all got D1 seats, Mrs and I sat in coach)
- 1x ATL-CDG (last minute cleared at gate, booked 10 days prior)

So with TATLs, we've had pretty good luck with GUCs. TPACs have been good also: about 75% for LAX-SYD, PDX-NRT, ATL-NRT, ICN-ATL.

With flexibility of travel dates, GUCs can be glorious additions to your travel plans. On specific dates, you're locked down to the 'system' which is completely dynamic as to how many people pay for full seats/upgrades and what's left over may be available for GUC application, otherwise it's at the gate.

Thanks everyone!

We are not flexible on dates. We have to leave on the 23rd. Also, we only want a non stop. Hopefully it will clear! If not, we have a Comfort + seat and the flight is less than 8 hours. So it isnít that bad to not have D1.
