Sorry, but what does this have to do with upgrades at all? Unless I have misread your post, the family of three without status were *confirmed* in coach. They snagged the seats/inventory before you and your companions did it sounds like. While that's unfortunate, it's all about who gets to the GA first and what availability there is at that time (as you probably know, being a DM).
At least you guys cleared and got Comfort+ to boot!

Just a lot of upgrade (and now standby) shenanigans on this trip...it made me frustrated.

This is completely F'd up. I have a hard time seeing where this is the reality given the RUC, RC and D status and fare class. Essentially 5 people above you had RUC, RC, D status and higher fare status. RUC is supposed to trump everything unless there are ties and someone else is also using one. Wacky.

Not a Diamond. I'm not even a GM any longer, just a lowly Silver. And yet, somehow last weekend I scored an upgrade to First Class on at ATL to BNA leg - and this route in both directions usually carries a lot of people with far more status than myself. I'd looked before we boarded our first flight and saw that we (my other half + me) had dropped down on the upgrade list for what were supposed to be four available FC seats.
I'm not complaining, you understand. I just had zero expectations. We barely made the gate. When we arrived and they were only doing pre-boarding I could stop and breathe and look at my phone. And that's when I saw the upgrade to First. The water bottles and PDB were greatly appreciated that day! But I still find it hard to believe that there was nobody above me with higher status.

Today was the first time I’ve been upgraded to FC on the 757, on the first morning flight RDU to ATL. I’ve been a Diamond for about a month and this was business travel. I’ve always been C+ on the busier Monday/Thursday flights. Moving up the list slowly but surely!
