648 MPH for E175!
 

At SEA this morning and probably had too much time to kill in the A SC.
Just for kicks opened flight tracker and saw this inbound into SEA (from Calgary), this is probably breaking all speed records and verified from wikipedia... 648 mph for an E175 is just wow!
Looks like a detour but checked the radar as well.. nothing significant in the area.

Most likely pilots and passengers got a thrill ride courtesy Jet Stream

In the early days we would sometimes look down and see the vehicles moving faster than the airplane we were flying;)

A few years ago, had a thrill ride from HNL-SEA, courtesy of the jet stream. Got in over an hour early, but it was a BUMPY ride.

I was on the opposite end of that a couple of years ago (Jan 2017) when I flew SEA-HNL and we were facing 100mph+ headwinds for a portion of the flight. We went slow enough that we took off on time but landed 30 minutes late, even with the fairly generous block time on these flights.

I remember back in pilot school thanks to headwind could put plane in configuration and stay still over ground. One of the most fun experiences I had learning to fly.

Similarly I once did MUC-ATL in 8h10m (block 10h51m) with the routing brining us over the US east coast in NC somewhere (quite southerly). Also very bumpy, but everyone was happy!

Flight coming from Canada, someone was probably changing the gauges back and forth from mph to kph... like you do in your car to freak out your passengers.

Here was my inbound flight that was late one day. I was tracking them from DTW

Remember those are groundspeed readouts. Airspeed (actual speed +/- wind vector) is probably within limits. During this time of year when the jetstream is moving south you will see some extremely high (and equivalently low) groundspeeds).

Back in 2010 or 2011 I was waiting at JFK for a Comair CRJ-900 coming in from Houston (I think) to take me to ROC. By the groundspeed alone it broke Mach 1 :p

I don't think anyone here things a commercial passenger jet is breaking mach 1. They are surfing with the best of them though.

My screenshot, I showed to the Captain when we boarded (same crew) and he asked me to send it to him via text.

Pretty cool. I've had the 767 up to about 615kts (ground speed) and we shave a good 40 minutes off a Transcon. Of course once we got to EWR, no gate, and we sat for almost 30 waiting for one...

Yeah just groundspeed when being pushed by a good tailwind/jetstream. Can easily get over 700mph depending on the jetstream. Relative airspeed is still in normal cruise tolerance however.

The fastest I personally measured was 733 mph ground speed on a two hour and 15 minute flight from SLC to ATL.
