Think Twice About Buying A Ticket Just To Pass Security

Courtesy of CNN.com. I wonder if this would happen in the U.S. when meeting someone at the gate or seeing someone off.

I suspect because SIN is a city/state with flights only to other countries this is more of a border security issue than anything. If you buy a ticket and go through security and presumably border control (so you’re now in a “transit zone”) and then intentionally don’t board you could face penalties like those mentioned in the article. Also some terminals are designed only for departing pax (on the departure level), so if you tried to stay you would have to find someone to help you get into the customs areas to re-enter.

This policy wouldn't apply to any US airports and only Intl ones where one would go through passport control enroute to the sterile area.

I wonder if DL would object to someone doing this thereby taking a seat that could otherwise be sold, SC access, etc.

in that case the issue still has nothing to do with whether you go through security or not. Delta can change their policy on close-in refunds if they want (the 24-hour cancellation is only required by law for flights more than 7 days from purchase).

The issue of lounge access has been litigated, if you're routinely buying tickets just to hit up a lounge then getting a refund they're going to get you eventually.

In either case, these are all civil matters, not anything that police would get involved in.

Well if they do object to it, it’s apparently not a strong enough objection to be prohibited by the conditions of carriage. Whereas AA, for example, specifically prohibits purchasing a ticket solely to access airport facilities.

The 24-hour policy is irrelevant, one can always purchase a fully refundable ticket.

Of course purchasing a ticket you don’t intend to use could arguably be considered fraud.

Are there any such airports in the US?

NO. Thus why everyone must clear immigration in US, even if connecting ITI. We dont even truly have "exit' immigration. The airlines send a passenger manifest but that's it. (Some airports are testing a biometric (video) system as way of creating an exit immigration system)

Thus was strictly an immigration issue. You must clear exit immigration to enter planeside. This means clearing immigration to exit airport. It also means having access to tax-free area at SIN.

Do you officially exit the country when clearing security or boarding the plane?

Hi,

At SIN T123 you go through immigration ( security is done at each gate) prior to the shopping area and the various concourses with an escalator to inbound passport control, baggage reclaim and customs. At T4 security is centralised ( like in the USA)

Regards

TBS

SIN is setup so that each hate has it's own security for T1-3. You clear immigration to enter what would be considered airside. You then are free to walk around in transit area, before boarding you go through security at the individual gate.

T4 you clear immigration, then security (centralized) and then are free to walk around transit area. No gate security as it was already done.

Have to remember there's no such thing as a domestic flight at SIN.

You can get a pass to assist someone to the gate. My mom is in a wheel chair and do it for her and my father is old, so just grab one for him to hang out with him while he waits for the plane since he doesnt fly much any more and I can sort out any issues that may arise. Probably not a common known thing, other wise it would be abused. Also, they wont take my precheck number so I have to go through the normal line.

I tried this once. A couple of my children were flying as UMs, so I was required to escort them to the gate. The airline could not use my TSA Precheck for a gate pass.
